bjbjVwVw It's a terrible day outside. Your girlfriend or boyfriend has just dumped you.
You need a warm snack to cheer you up. Welcome to McRitchie's Kitchie! Today, on the menu:
Beans on toast. Ok, you will need baked beans. I usuually buy Sun-Q beans from E-mart or
a foreign food mart. Other beans are available. You also need English cheddar (cheese). I
go for extra mature for extra strong flavour. Don;t pay over 5000won for this. Again, E-mart
or a foreign food mart. You should be able to find this cheese. You can spice it up a
little bit with some: hot sauce, black pepper, and I know in Korea, strong flavours are appreciated,
so.. Cayenne pepper. You also, of course, need bread to make the toast with. Utensils,
what utensils do you need to make beans on toast? You need a plate, a pan, a knife and
fork. You could try eating them with chopsticks but it might take a very long time. You need
a toaster or, in my case, a grill, to make the toast with. complete with removable tray.
A grater to grate the cheese. If you don't have one of these, don't worry. But they are
pretty handy. Also, to top it all off, a mug for your cup of tea. To make the cup of tea,
you need a kettle as well. First, take your can of beans and your can opener. Without
this, these are useless. [struggles to open can of beans] This is an example of the difficulties
encountered when trying to make a simple dish. You should always buy high quality products.
Ah, here we go! We're on a roll now. It's on! Beans are ready to go in the pan. Put
the gas on. Don't put it on too high. That could cause problems later. I'll explain.
Put the beans in the pan on a medium heat I would say. Take your wooden spoon for stirring.
As I say, not too high heat. If you put it on too high, they can stick to the bottom
of the pan. OK, now, if you've got a toaster, don't put the toast on yet. But if you've
got one of these things here , you'll need to put the toast on now because it takes a
while. So, again, get the gas on. Oh, it's not working. Try not to blow your kitchen
up when you're doing this. OK, it's on. Now, two slices of bread usually does it. If you're
a hungry guy like me, one can per person. Two slices of bread, pop them under the grill.
Now, if you come over here, Cameraman Chris, you can see the beans are starting to bubble
away nicely. Oooh, lovely, look at that. They're not bubbling. I should put them back on the
gas. You can see them bubbling away there. The toast's on. Time to get the cheese ready.
This is the thing that really makes it a proper meal, I think. Open the cheese and prepare
your grater. Cheese grater. The beans are starting to bubble so I'm just going to reduce
the heat there so they don't start sticking. Grate away. If you've had a bad day, this
is good therapy. Chris, do you want to try some of this cheese? Chris: Absolutely, Mike.
OK, here you go. Don't get those cheesy fingers on your nice camera now. Chris: Mmmmmm. Thank
you. That's good cheese, Mike. Ok, so that should be enough cheese for the end. I tend
to like to throw lots on, emmm, at the end but I don't know, if you're cooking for other
people, you don't wanna upset them too much. Um, so,... it's all on. It's time to start
thinking about what you want to put in your beans. Now, the flavour from beans is alright,
it's pretty good. It's quite basic though. So, what I like to try and do is spice it
up a little bit. And.... Chris, do you like spicy food? Oh, I love spicy food, Mike. Let's
go for a spice-tastic version. Let's not just kick it up one notch, but 3 notches, ok? One,
hot sauce. Come and see those delicious beans. Two! Black pepper. Cracked black pepper. Chris:
Mmmmm.... Get a good 15 or 16 twists in there. Lots of black pepper and last of all, some
cayenne pepper. Just a little dash. It's fairly strong stuff so you don't want to put in too
much. Give it a stir. They're almost ready. Ok, I'm going to check on the toast. As I
say, the toast can take a while. Still not done. Still officially bread. The evidence.
Time to check the toast! I should really buy a toaster. This takes far too long. OK, turn
the toast over. The kettle's on for a nice cup of tea. The beans are still bubbling away.
It's probably a good idea to turn the heat off. If you want to test them at this point,
it might be a good idea. Maybe you need some more cayenne pepper, maybe you need some black
pepper, maybe you need some more hot sauce. You can throw whatever you like in there,
really. OK, while the toast is going, while the kettle is boiling, let's..... I'll tell
you a little bit about this dish. It's been known,.... it's been described in the media
as the nutritional powerhouse of British cooking. Eh, why a powerhouse? 4 reasons, really. Protein,
fibre, iron and calcium. So, what looks like a pretty banal, boring dish is actually very,
very good for you. Ok, so get your knife is ready. Check the toast is ready so we can
turn the gas off. Yes, there we go. Where's the plate? There we go. Are you excited, Chris?
Chris: I'm very excited, Mike. I can barely contain myself. Chris has kindly agreed to
waive his camera fee today. I'll be paying him in food. Actually, to be precise, I'll
be paying him in beans. So, he'll be the tester of today's meal. There you go. National powerhouse!\
Chris: That is a powerhouse. And, get your cheese. Try not to drop it on the floor. Drizzle
it over there. Whoops, I broken my rule. Chris: You've dropped it on the floor, Mike. Some
more cheese, Chris? Chris: A little more, please, yes. And you can finish it off with
some black pepper just to make it look nice. Parsley wouldn't really look right. The beans
are ready to eat. Knife and fork, some decorative cans at the side there. And a nice steaming
hot cup of tea. Chris, how do you feel? Chris: Hungry, Mike. Awesome. Enough chat. Go for
it. Chris: Make sure I get some of that cheese on it. Loading it up like a pro. In it goes.
OK, Chris, wait 'til you've swallowed and chewed and everything. What's the verdict?
Chris: (with thumbs up) Quality. Nice one. Chris: Thank you, Mike. Good job. No problem.
That's all we've got time for today on McRitchie's Kitchie. Um, we'll see you next time! THEME
