Hello I'm Paige Cronje, Welcome to Buckingham NEWS at 5
[Music]
The student union Executive Committee, is a student body
that has many responsibilities
from establishing clubs and societies to improving student life.
Jessica McAndrew went to find out about where the funds of the Committee are actually going.
Each term the student union are given a grant to spend
as they see fit
we went to see how exactly the money is being spent
They get 10,000£ per term this is quite a new thing
its only been happening this year
Where is the money from? Is it a grant?
It's a grant from the University which was given by the Vice Chancellor
Do you think there should be more transparency on what the SU is spending?
Perhaps the SU Exec could set up notices on notice boards or send out an email
and inform the rest of the students where the money is being spent.
After we spoke to Sheila Taylor, she provided us with a copy of the
spendings for the Executives from the summer term.
It is totaled up to 18,000£
Some of the expenditure was used on rebranding the SU
and notably an honors board
We ask the treasurer Nigel Nhalamba if this was a justified use.
Us as the SU Executives took initiative in thinking that this was something
that was in the best interest for students.
and thats why we did it.
Don't you think it is quite a lot of money to spend on a board of SU presidents
We had a lot of money to spend on the SU Executive so i guess its a decision that we came to
as quorum to decide on whether or not it was in the
But it only represents a small portion of the students at the University, and doesn't
really benefit anyone directly.
Well I agree, but at the same time you need to understand
it is representative to people that have made a service
so prior SU executives and once that are yet to come
Following the interview it was clear that the
fact that any committee doesn't have to officially published accounts shows a lack of transparency
between the current SU committee and the student body

Confusion has broken out across the student body
following an email from Pro Vice Chancellor David Billington
announcing that all advertising on University property needs to be approved by him.
Jessica Rusher went to find out why.
When advertising an event for a society one of the the best ways to do so is to leaflet
around the university campus however an email sent out last week by the
University sparked confusion over exactly who is allowed to do so and when
Here at the societies fair, clubs and groups are advertising their events in the correct
way. Of course any society functioning at the University
is allowed to advertise their events and project anywhere around campus.
Permission is only needed for advertising if it's
on behalf of a private company.
The University campus is private property and the same laws apply to the University
campus as all private properties, which means you need
permission from the property owner to be able to advertise
on their property. Advertising student parties is perfectly
OK advertising furniture for sale or advertising
a bake sale or whatever else you're doing as part of the
student body is absolutely fine.
What we need to be able to control though, is
outside businesses flooding the compass with leaflets
with things which are often completely inappropriate
One student who had been leafleting on campus declined to comment on behalf of their company
but said to Buckingham News they they woudn't want to comment on ÉÉa libertarian University
limiting people's right to choose and attempting to monopolize the village with regards to
students. The direct pizza and peri peri chicken company
owner Shelly Ken spoke to us and said they'd been
contacted by the University and will be withdrawing leafletting from the campus.
Local events company BUX and local bar The Whale
have declined to comment on the leafletting situation.
So now the rules and regulations have been clarified
for the University, let's hope that Societies around campus
will continue to promote their events without confusion.

It has been quiet around the University's Amnesty International Society the last
couple of termes the recent change in presidentship however has breathed new life
into the long-established student organization. Navpreet Grewal has the story.
The history of the Amnesty International Society at the University of Buckingham has previously
been flawed with inconsistency, disorganization
and silence the biggest paradox when it comes to organizations
such as Amnesty. However the recent elections have brought
a breath of fresh air back into the society.
With a passionate new executive lead by dedicated new president Chindalay Phonsavath.
What are the ambitions of the Amnesty International Society within the campus?
Well we would like to raise awareness about human rights issues
first of all because it seems like most of the people on campus
are pretty ignorant when it comes to it. if you mention human rights, some people actually
walk away from you thinking you are mentioning some
kind of disease, and its one of the very fundamental things
in life that you should know about.
Founded 1961 Amnesty International has É focused on
prisoners but its aims have responded to the changing
pattern in human rights violations. We asked members of the society what Amnesty
International means to them.
As a Law Student I'm passionate for Amnesty International
because it brings force behind the human rights movement.
You don't get organizations which has wide ranging or addresses
the most important issues in the same way that Amnesty does.
At a diverse University such as Buckingham where the students
and staff come from different countries and backgrounds
there are a verity of human rights issues which everyone can
identify with. I'm Navpreet Grewal, this is Buckingham News.
In other News : As Students settle back into University life,
the University welcomes not only the new students but also the new chancellor. Lady Keswick
is the new Chancellor of the University of Buckingham.
She succeeds the fourth Chancellor, Lord Tanlaw who stepped down in March 2013 after two years
of service. A ceremony to install Lady Keswick as chancellor will take place in march 2014.
The University of Buckingham students were in an early
spirit of giving as this years rag week saw charity Scope UK
and The Little Princess Trust both received donations of 1,750 £
"This years Rag Week donations has been one of the most successful rag week donation every
we have had at history of school."
Duke's music in Buckingham offered free Zither playing
taster sessions last saturday. "Just has that, I don't know sort of like
a harm magical sound to me"
[Zither playing] "If you are a little bit musical, you like
music, I think it's quite an easy instrument to pick up."
Musically skilled or not, all are welcome to try.
Being the new kid at University can be tough especially in the first couple of days, a
guiding hand can be more than helpful. The new mentoring scheme at the University
of Buckingham provides exactly that, a helping
hand. Ben Fraser explored the new initiative.
The University of Buckingham students have set up a mentoring
scheme and are now looking to recruit mentors and mentor coordinates.
There was a meeting held in the Staff dinning room in the OTM
on Thursday 12th of September where people could sign up.
The scheme is about a student driven initiative to help
freshers settle in, adjust, find their way, meet new people
and gain a certificate in mentoring participation. Finally approved with the executive level
support from the University This student initiative is now actively recruiting
for mentors to be paired up with new students
within their faculties for the september intake. "Well we are pairing up the new freshers,
so people who are coming into the University in January, September or July intakes.
The idea is, that freshers can come here have a whole lot of
anxiety about starting university for the first time,
?? the university itself having to start a new course
of study, where the lectures are taking place and Buckingham
you have different campuses as well. So the basis is really pairing current students
who have been here 6 to 9 months[whispers] three
terms. umm with people that are just starting their
first course of university. And they can ask basically,
once they are paired up they can ask any question to do
with where it the lecture rooms, where can I buy stationary,
where can I buy some bedding, where can I buy you know groceries
and things like that, where is the busstop? you know
Whats the best bus to take to Oxford? Finally approved with the exec level support
from the the University this student initiative is now actively recruiting
for mentors to be paired up with new students within their
faculty for the September intake.

Sport is an important part of university life, it allows people to compete, work on their
fitness and, especially for freshers, socialize
the sports and society's fair on Wednesday gave students the opportunity to sign up to
a number of sporting clubs and a few new ones as well.
Hanxian *** was there to find out more
On Wednesday this week the University held the Sports and Society Fair helping
students to sign up for a variety of different sports.
with many expressing their opinion. "The sports at the Uni are OK, but like everything
in life it can be improved "I think we need more advertisement and more
emails "Make people know more about our sports office
really offer a lot of sports I spoke to Stefan Ridley about the sports
available to students. Sport within the University is important because
it gives students the opportunity to
socialize, gives students the opportunity to meet other students
that they possible wouldn't meet within their classes,
it gives them also the opportunity to participate in
physical activityso it enhances their fitness What sports at the University this year?
