WITH A FESTIVAL OF THIS SIZE, IT TAKES A LOT OF WORK BEHIND THE SCENES
TO MAKE EVERYTHING RUN SMOOTHLY.
IT IS ALSO A FESTIVAL THAT GETS BIGGER EVERY YEAR.“From a police perspective, we have been planning
this thing for ...
almost two months, looking at every little detail from
reuniting lost families all the way up to a major incident.
It really takes a lot to put this together and make this successful”
>>AND THE PLANNING PAID OFF.
IN THE END, IT ALL RAN LIKE WELL OILED MACHINE. >>“it was a fantastic concert.
The crowds were moving very well and everything
was just very fluid.”
>>THE POLICE DEPARTMENT INTRODUCED SOME NEW TOOLS THIS YEAR TO HELP MAKE SURE
EVERYTHING STAYED ORDERLY.
THESE TOOLS ACTED AS FORCE MULTIPL IERS, ALLOWING THE POLICE TO BE IN MORE PLACES
WITH THE SAME AMOUNT OF MANPOWER.
SUPPORTING THE FOOT PATROLS WERE OBSERVATION TOWERS TO PUT EYES IN THE
SKY OVERLOOKING THE CROWDS.
BICYCLES PATROLS WERE ALSO PROVIDING A RAPID RESPONSE FORCE. >>this year we are
really incorporating the bicycle guys.
It seems to be very effective. They seem to get around
a lot faster.
They are much more mobile.
We are using them more as a reactionary type force where they can get to a situation quick,
stabilize it, and if other officers are needed to come in.
>>FOR ORGANZIERS, SUCCESS IS MEASURED BY LOOKING AT THE PATRONS.
>>“the smiles on people’s faces and
the appreciation from the
patrons is how we know we have done and
delivered the festival the way it needs to be delivered.”
>> FOR POLICE,
SUCCESS IS GAUGED WHEN THE FESTIVAL WRAPS UP
AND THE CROWDS HAVE HEADED HOME.>> “we will gauge that level of success on safety,
we make sure we have a safe event
and make sure people are having a good time and that they feel safe and they
are out here with their families enjoying themselves.”
>>FOR THE 2012 DOGWOOD FESTIVAL,
MANY PEOPLE WERE ABLE TO ENJOY THE SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF THE FESTIVAL
AND ONLY A HANDFULL OF PEOPLE
WERE ARRESTED OR CITED.
