Welcome back to our Extraordinary World Segment
Please welcome Khun Jay
- Sawatdee Khrap (Greeting) - Sawatdee Kha (Greeting)
Sawatdee Khrap viewers
Where are you going to take Khun Tin and I this week?
(Vietnamese) I went to Vietnam
The only word I could make out was 'Vietnam'
Ahh, that shows that you have a good ear
Yes, we went to Vietnam
- Right - Just as we arrived back, we saw that the monsoon hit
So we're lucky that we arrived back home just in time
In Vietnam, you know there are a lot of amazing and extraordinary things
What city were you in?
Today we're in Ho Chi Minh
Sawatdee Khrap (Greeting)
For today's extraordinary world segment, we've traveled here to Ho Chi Minh
or 'Saigon' - the capital city of South Vietnam
We'll be visiting a place here that's really extraordinary
To see what makes it so extraordinary, you'll need to stay tuned!
From looking at what's behind me, you might think we're at a temple
If you thought that you'd be wrong, because we're actually at a theme park
The name of this Theme Park is 'Suoi Tien' and is famous all over Vietnam
It's a place where Vietnamese people come from all over the country to learn about Vietnamese History, Religion and Culture
I'll take you around so you can see just how they mix history, religion and culture
You can see very clearly here that this is a water themed fun park that is built on religion and culture
This here is a portrait of paradise
You can see all the four sacred animals represented here
Up top there is the Dragon
The Unicorn
The base here is a Turtle
And over on this side is the mythical 'Hong' bird
or 'Phoenix'
This is the architypal Chinese / Vietnamese image of heaven
This water attraction is called 'Bien Tien Doc' - Childrens Water Heaven
The whole design of it is really extraordinary - like something out of a fairytale
May I ask - what brought you here to Sui Tin?
Just now he said that he came here because this both a beautiful fun park, as well as a cultural center
He wanted to bring his son here so both of them could pray in the temple together
Why not just go to a normal temple?
He said that if it were just a normal temple, it wouldn't be a place to take his little son
Sure it's fun here at Sui Tin
But coming here, in the midst of having fun, his son can also learn about Vietnam's culture and history
If it were a normal temple, you couldn't do that
Thank you
Time to go on the roller-coaster!
Wow, I haven't been on a roller coaster for a long time, I suspect I'm getting OLD
I'm here with the park's manager to ask a few questions
Normally, we don't tend to see a fun park mixed with religious themes
so I'd like to ask what inspired them to mix the two
Ms. Mai, may I ask how is it that Suoi Tien fun park can mix culture, history and religion all in one?
Ms. Mai said that yes, normally you see religion and fun parks separated
but they intentionally mixed them together here because they'd like to teach both the young generation and Vietnamese at large
all about Vietnam's religious roots, culture and history
All the rides and basically everything you see here has been designed
to be both fun, but also to be rooted in Vietnam's history
You can see at the water attraction just now, a giant effigy
that is the mother and father of the Vietnamese people
Or even the Dragon here behind me
The dragon is a sacred animal to the Vietnamese
It is what gave birth to everything we see around us
Do the young generation in Vietnam feel the same way toward religion as the older generation?
Ms. Mai said that both the new and the old generations in Vietnam take religion quite seriously
And when they come here to Suoi Tien, they don't just come to have fun
They also come here to go to temple and pray
And learn more about and from their religion
You could say that Suoi Tien has breathed new life into religion in Vietnam
Thank you Ms. Mai
This is the first time in my life that I've been to a religious themed fun park
It's definitely Neua Chan Phan Plaek!
