I think that editing is the best profession in the world
its extremely variating
if you have an interest in the craft
i love this job, even editing commercials is fun
i like getting difficult problems to solve
and making the best i can from any material
whatever it may be
the things i make myself is about communication
i try to make some kind of statement
in one way or another
if you find that interesting, this is the most efficient tool
by controlling audio and video, you can say practically anything
you can communicate with other people
i prefer to start an argument, a visual discussion of sorts
you can be a part of a debate by making audiovisual statements like i do
the viewers might get an idea that they use to communicate further
we made the documentary the planet, that was a kind of film that you felt
we hoped that it would start a discussion
at home around the kitchen table
or at the coffee break at work
thats what you can hope for
when working like this
there are proof that THE PLANET made a difference
it has been aired in over thirty countries
it feels like it really made a difference
also working with Gandinis film VIDEOCRACY
feeling that it engages people, for real
thats a wonderful feeling
we worked so hard for so many years
we rearranged and re edited, we really worked hard finishing this film
often losing faith in ever finishing it
really
we just kept on working, changed things. We changed the entire soundtrack
often there is no script
just a vast quantity of footage
and there is are a million ways of editing a documentary
before find the right way, you have to put in some hours. its a long way to go
you have to try thing out. Just writing it down on paper is hard. You have to try different styles
you have to watch and listen
in context, otherwise you cant see if it works or not
so every time you make a large project like the planet, videocracy or lucky people center
its a victory every time you end up with a finished film
there was a composer that was hired to compose a soundtrack
but when we tried to fit the music to the film
the music and the video did work well together
it became to heavy, too sad, too depressing.
Erik started testing other kinds of music
older kinds of entertainment music
morricone
music like that
that kind of music lifted the film, created something fresh, new
it created a tension that was more interesting and weird, in a good way
using the music of the entertainment industry
to add feeling to the film
but we couldnt afford morricone so we bought tons of archive music
amongst that the entire czech symphony orchestra library from the 30:s to the 80:s
all the music they had made for films, shorts and animations. Strange and weird stuff. Strange instruments
that music i started editing, looping
the intro to VIDEOCRACY is made out of maybe five different pieces
that i have edited in final cut, i made the loops there
and timed them so that they should work with the material
so the entire soundtrack was edited by parts of the czech music
If someone have the ambitions to become a good editor, studying music is necessary
an editor today has to know music
in one way or another
you have to know how to edit music, compose and create sound effects.
An editor has to know how to work with sound and video simultaneously
only editing is not enough, you have to evolve
and learn about music and audio, editors that dont get this in ten years from now will not get any jobs
so if you have an interest in music and video
You should apply for the education that i have, on the university of Dalarna
and evolve in that direction
