And one more, press up, and one.
Jeff Lyons' personal transformation is well under way. His journey bigger than himself.
In May of 2009 the father of two small children weighed 275.
And I couldn't even get down on the floor and play with my two-and-a-half-year-old.
I physically hurt.
He made a choice to take back his life.
I've tried dieting over the last probably 10 years and was never able to keep it off.
He enrolled in Community Health Network's Journey to Health program. With the help of
a health coach, a therapist, dietitian and personal trainer, he was empowered to make
better choices.
We are holistic people. You know, it's just that we have to consider the whole person.
The biggest thing was cut out a lot of the fatty foods that I was eating.
Registered dietitian Robin Stahl says we can all learn from the lessons she taught Jeff,
starting with the most important meal of the day.
I always say that appetite and hunger are not your enemies. They're your body talking
to you. It's blood sugar management--keeping blood sugar very stable throughout the morning.
Also, don't over-restrict.
The thing with me assigning the portion control is that people take that as a rigid "must."
I think there are days we need a few more calories than we did yesterday.
And, surprisingly, stress eating can be a good thing if you do it right.
Because chewing is a great stress release. So we need to actually chew the food and the
less processed the food, the more chewing needs to be done. So fresh fruit versus a
canned fruit.
It's not solely about what's on Jeff's plate. It's also a matter of moving.
I'm now exercising four to five days a week, which I would have never been able to do a
year and a half ago.
Now, 70 pounds later, Jeff knows he's doing the right thing for himself and his family.
Being able to play with my kids and know that I can be around with my kids for the next
20 years is such a huge deal for me.
The Journey to Health program is available to companies that want to sign up their employees.
