As a child I thought of myself
as an actor
then I went to study to become a rabbi
Then I came back to theatre to found the Jewish Theatre then I closed the Jewish Theatre. I founded Salto Mortale, directed plays, organized a community,
did politics,
dealt with public matters,
- Why did you have to close the Jewish theatre? -
Long or short? - Short -
Because it was over.
There was no ground for it to exist. It didn't make any sense any more.
What we found
was community theatre,
creating community really
and it (The Jewish theatre)
couldn't survive in the
terrified stiff Jewish present in Budapest.
Then we founded the Salto Mortale Theatre.
Lysistrate
40 performances
and Arturo Ui
The last performance of the
Jewish theatre
I can't say anything more up-to-date from nothing a performance was born which was done in the neighbourhood as well from a lot of money, nicely, successfully,
half a year after the political change in 2010 it was over, but we are still playing it.
Midsummer party, disco theatre experiment,
a lot of energy,
an amazing failure. I will have to work on it, I am convinced you can make a peformance in a disco, a pub theatre.
- And now -
- What is the reason of your emigrating? -
I could direct Arturo Ui while
I was sweeping the streets
But now i'm not
I am 34 years old for a quarter of a century I live in this sweet hell called theatre
I think
if I stay here
I will
I will get stale
I need new impulses
and
it's a shame I can hardly speak English.
I sucked
I really sucked in this dream in 1989
we're going to be a part of Europe we're going to be here Jewish people, Hungarian Jews like the Californian,
proud part of a big whole.
I don't want to be an Asian
- You are emigrating because of political reasons? -
Political and...other things as well. This decay of theatre
is necessary
in Hungary
The theatre which does not depend on the audience
or sponsors, you get it...
There is no independent theatre.
On the audience,
the sponsors
the sponsors
and the state you can depend on...
if you depend on all of them more or less you are independent.
The state is the most dangerous.
In Hungary there is no middle class.
it was
They have no money to spend 2000 HUF (5 quids)
in a pub to see
a performance even if there are *** in it.
Get it...
It's going fast.
- What's this adventure? -
- What's this adventure? -
The core, the essence? Travelling?
Yes it is an adventure.
I've no idea. I'm not sure
but Arturo UI might be my last directing job.
It's a big carmic change
I can't be prepared for it.
I can be prepared with my life
What are you looking for?
As an adventurer?
I would try what it is like to have
Indian friends,
Black mates,
Mexicans,
Get it? Not only
taking part in 8-10
clubs drinking beer,
saving the world,
when 3-4 people tell you what would be good
for the country.
But
But among people...
I can't imagine what it is like to live in a city with 12 million inhabitants...
2 million I can imagine.
This is my reality.
But London has 12 million. It'll give me lot of sensory impression..
