The hotel had been looking for ways to ensure that we lessen the impact on the beautiful
environment of the Lake District, so first we decided to replace our 4 oil burning boilers
with one extremely efficient biomass boiler.
The hotel would burn around 93,000 litres of kerosene annually, resulting in 280 tonnes
of carbon being released into the atmosphere - plus we needed 26 deliveries of fuel per
year.
With the biomass boiler installed, we now expect only 10-12 deliveries of wood pellets
per year and that 280 tonnes of carbon has been saved.
We have over 1000 light bulbs at the hotel, many of which are on most of the time. So
our green team decided to change over to LED light bulbs.
They last longer and reduce the amount of electricity being used by 80-90%, saving money
and lowering our carbon footprint by an estimated 58 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
The hotel has been recycling, reusing and reducing for many years. Recycling just one
tonne of paper or cardboard saves 2,340 litres of oil, over twenty-six and a half litres
of water and 2.5 cubic metres of landfill space.
We recycle 3.6 tonnes of paper and cardboard each year so that is a saving of 25 tonnes
of Carbon dioxde in to the atmosphere on the oil saved alone.
We also recycle 14 tonnes of glass each year reducing our carbon footprint by a further
98 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide.
Rather than send our old bedroom furniture to landfill, we work with local charity Impact
Housing, that work with youth groups and people at risk so it can still be put to good use.
It’s hard to measure the carbon impact of this but it just makes us feel good that others
can benefit from these efforts.
We’ve changed our heating methods, reduced our energy consumption and recycle our waste,
meaning we’re doing everything we can to maintain the beautiful environment of the
Lake District that we all love.
