Suburban studies is an interdisciplinary field and at the national center
for suburban studies we study several dimensions of
suburban life. Those include the sociology of the suburbs
the history of suburbs, their economy as well as their politics.
Students who are at Hofstra and who are studying the suburbs
really benefit from having so many great examples of different types of suburbs nearby.
So there's the iconic levittown which provided
housing for returning war veterans as well several other suburbs in the area which
are home to groups of new immigrants. So one recent trend has been that
international immigrants are, when they move to the US, are now moving directly to suburbs rather than
cities. You can see examples of that on Long Island
It's relatively uncommon that we are the
only suburban studies institutes
in the US. That is solely devoted to studying and researching
the suburbs.
