Welcome to this edition of the Multimedia Impact Weather Briefing for Central Alabama.
This briefing will focus on winter weather and extreme temperatures early next week.
At 6 pm Sunday, the cold front will move into northwestern portions of Central Alabama,
bitterly cold air will move in behind the front. Temperatures
ahead of the front will be mild in the 50s with rainfall limited to just
along the front. Precipitation will linger behind the front with a brief wintry mixture
of rain/freezing rain/sleet is expected before the precipitation ends.
At 9 pm Sunday, the cold front will blast further to the east with temperatures dropping
rapidly across west Central Alabama. The wintry mix of rain/freezing
rain/sleet/snow will progress to the east and will
approach the Birmingham and Tuscaloosa areas around this time.
By midnight, the front will be nearly across the forecast area with the wintry mix of precipitation
limited to east Central Alabama. Flurries will inger
across northwestern portions of Central Alabama. Again, expect
this changeover to be brief and will only last for 1-3 hrs.
There is the chance for some minor accumulations across areas generally along and north of
I-20. Expect a glaze of ice and/or light dusting of snow
will be possible.
Here are the most recent observations of single digit temperatures across Central Alabama.
Expect record temperatures will be possible Monday and Tuesday with some of the coldest
air in the last 20 to 25 years.
Here are the record lows for Monday and Tuesday. Forecasted temperatures are near record lows
and forecast models are maintaining a consistent cold solution. Expect record lows to be set
across Central Alabama Monday and Tuesday mornings, with afternoon highs only in the
teens to around 30 degrees on Monday, and mid 20s to around 30 degrees on Tuesday. Most
of the area will be below freezing from Sunday evening until mid day Wednesday.
Strong arctic front will blow through the area Sunday afternoon into the overnight hours.
Record breaking cold will be possible Monday and Tuesday mornings.
Showers will be limited to right along and just behind the front.
Rainfall amounts will generally be around 0.25 of an inch. Temperatures will drastically
fall by as much as 20 degrees in just a couple of hours with frontal
passage. Any lingering moisture behind the front will freeze leading
to possible travel issues Sunday night into Monday morning. A brief wintry mix is possible
behind the front with minor accumulations possible north of I-20. Strong northwesterly
winds will create wind chills below zero Monday through Tuesday morning.
