Next to this painting, you can see another very popular Renaissance genre, portraiture.
This is a portrait by Raphael Sanzio as well. We don't actually know who this young man
is, but we know that he is a young man, that he knows that he must have lived in the early
16th century. We can see this from the way he is dressed. This is the contemporary fashion
of the day. This young man has got beautiful face, thinking about something, meditating
on something, and we can in the background landscape. But the landscape and the figure
itself are not closely related to one another. It's more important on the portrait to see
the character, the man himself, to show the man. As a typical Renaissance painting, the
background, Italian Renaissance painting I'm talking about. The background is just an additional
aspect of the portrait in which the person itself is more important than the background.
