So this is going to be a small introduction to Zui, a tool for collaborative translation
but it can be used by a single person just as well.
This is an instance of the software
If you want to do anything, you will first have to register.
Let's make an account
With my name...
I am registered, and here is my picture!
I already have a picture because the pictures get loaded from Gravatar
You can see here a small paragraph about translation mode
This will be the place where I will make announcements
about new functionality and such.
Okay, we first have to create a project
There is no project yet, so let's click on "new project"
A project is a collection of things that belong together somehow
It does not really need to be a collection based on content
Here we will just have an organizational collection
So let's write "my private translations"
for all my translations that are not work related
Down here we can select collaborators
Just click on them
They could then work on my project too
But I de-select all, I want to work all alone
Here is already a "Roger Braun" because I already registered
with a different email
Here one can write more information about your project
For example "my very private translations"...
And now I'll create the project
So here is my project!
You see I am alone in the "collaborators" field
One can also add collaborators later
What you need now is a "fragment"
The smallest unit of translation is a "fragment"
I tried chapters or paragraphs as the smallest unit
but that does not always work well
Let's click on "new fragment"
Now just write a title and the content.
I have an article from Asahi
let's try to translate it.
I'll use this as a title
Or rather, let's not use this
as we want to translate the title, too.
So let's take the URL as title
and the rest as content
Now we can create the fragment
Put some spaces in here...
Nice, now we have title, content, last update and a comment count
Let's click on it
and we are in comment mode
I can write a comment...
"A very interesting article"
And I can add tags belonging to the comments
I'll tag with "opinion"
Okay, now I have this comment and people could answer
For example with a counter opinion
"A stupid article"
This is a direct answer to my comment
And one can see that it uses a tree view
that makes it easy to see who answered to what
It's handy for discussions
I could now just tag a comment with "translation"
and translate there
But there is a better way, "translation mode"
which has some tools that aid you.
The title looks a bit long, but it does not matter
I'll try to translate now
So how can I figure out the meaning of these words?
For example this, or this
I know this is earthquake or something
and this is about the capital or something, I don't know
Now there are several possibilities
If I select a piece of text and right-click
I get suggestions
"earthquake disaster" for example
I can also search at google or wadoku.eu
and add this word to a glossary
Now I'll search at wadoku.eu so you can see what happens
Now I have this in wadoku.eu and can see what it means
And these suggestions are also loaded from wadoku.eu
They are not always perfect
As an example, here is a suggestion for "earthquake prevention"
It's not always right, but if you know a bit about it
you can easily see the right answer
so let's take "earthquake disaster"
and click on it
and now we have it in our comment
so what does this mean?
"This day"
now we have "earthquake disaster this day"
so we know a bit about the meaning
let's rephrase that
"at the earthquake disaster on that day..."
that's not a good translation, but lets just write this as a draft
so what does this mean? "capital area"
so here we have 515 ten thousand people, how much is this?
how many zeros... one, two, three... and we have our number
and if we want to find out what this means
let's click again
"returning to your home"
now our sentence is "at that day of the earthquake distaster in the capital area 5 million people
could not come home"
this is a bad translation but we could get the general meaning
quite fast without having to do a lot of lookups
now I can do a nicer translation
"at the day of the earthquake, five million people in the capital area could not get to their homes"
and who says that?
It's an estimate by the cabinet office
Now press "comment"
and if you go back to the fragment you see my translation
with "aided-translation" as a tag
I can answer here just like a normal comment
"nice translation"
There is another functions for words that can't be found
for example, always when this occurs
we want to know how much it is
"bannin" means all people, but not here, it is a number
now I often make mistakes with these numbers
so I can select it and add it to a glossary
Let's say it means five million people
When I save this now
it is highlighted in my text three times
and I can find out what it means by hovering over it
or clicking on it
and now its in my comment field
so I dont have to calculate each time
I can just click on it and save the comment
Let's look at the fragment
and it worked!
This will be saved in the glossary and can be edited there
this glossary is not project specific
so anything you add can be seen in all other projects
This can be problematic if people are working on very
different translations from different fields
that use similar words
that have different translations
I will have to come up with something for that
but all in all its a nice help
That's it for this time
I think it can already be of use
I hope you will try it out
a link will be posted in the video description
So have fun with it!
