Extreme cold isn't only bad when you are outside, it can also cause problems inside your home.
Here is a look at what you should be doing now to protect your home from possible cold
damage. One thing you don't want to have go out on you when cold weather hits is your
furnace. But the reality is that for some people it will happen. Brien Biehn of Van
Valer Heating Cooling and plumbing gives tips to WTHR 13 viewers. Furnaces are more prone
to break down in extremely cold temperatures. When temperatures are below zero, furnaces
operate at maximum capacity so it's running often if not all the time.
Tips: 1. Check the exhaust pipes, or (plastic flue
pipes) that go from your furnace to the outside of the home. Home owners can walk outside
and check to make sure that there is no snow blocking the exhaust which could cause a shut
down due to pressure build up on the furnace.
2. With the furnace running at its full capacity during cold temperatures, it is important
to keep the furnace filter clean. You can pick up filters from your local store. It's
important to have clean furnace filters because dirty filters will restrict the air flow and
cause a possible stoppage of your furnace operating.
The reality is that if your furnace does go out then you are going to have to give someone
a call and there may be a wait.
3. While you are waiting for a technician to arrive you can use a couple of space heaters
which can keep the average size home in the mid 60's for many hours a long as there are
not a lot of open doors and windows.
