We are on our way with La Salud to Southwest Detroit to do some community service work.
La Salud is the Latino student group at the School of Public Health and we focus on educating
the University and surrounding communities about Latino health issues.
Today we are going to DHDC which is the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation, it's a really
great organization and it does work with Latinos in the community, they do English as a second
language classes, they do work with gang members, they do work with the high drop-out rates
that Southwest Detroit has, and those are definitely some issues we want to address,
and hopefully by establishing a relationship with DHDC, we can continue to address these
issues that we as students are so interested in learning about.
Hi, I'm Becca Lindsay, I'm the Chair of La Salud. We organized this event because students
made it known that they wanted to do a service event with the Latino community.
What we were really getting from members of la Salud was that they didn't just want to
do things in Ann Arbor or just focus on academic pursuits, they really wanted to focus on service,
and giving back to the community, and they really wanted to get to know the Latino community
in Detroit because a lot of SPH students aren't from Michigan.
I decided to help out today in the Southwest side because I want to help the community
back home in Detroit. We're cleaning up, mopping the floors, getting
the chairs back making it look like before, and it's been a lot of fun.
We are in the business of saving lives, you know, that's how I can say it best, [uhm]
that's what we do. You know, we try to save people lives. Whoever is listening or whatever
I want them to know that DHDC is here. And we are here to provide the services for the
community. The people here in Detroit needs this place, we need it, we need it more than
ever, we need more places like this. We have been honored to have the University
of Michigan School of Public Health here to help us work on certain programs, clean up
the building, work on certain different projects that we have going on. We look forward to
working more in the future. I know that everybody in the School of Public
Health feels that we need to give something to the community, and sometimes you have to
step up, take the initiative and get out there and do it yourself.
