[Pokemon Blue (J) TAS in 1:31:06 Author: aruka Rerecords: 283909]
[Original video from Nicovideo (Part 2/4): http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm20328083]
[For convenience, I will not be translating every little bit of Japanese that is shown in the game. I will merely try to refer to important stuff in broad terms.]
Somehow it is possible to Escape Rope from Bill's house. Use it to return to Cerulean City. (Fixed in Yellow version.)
[Nidoking's move list now reads: あばれる Thrash, つのでつく Horn Attack, にらみつける Leer. バブルこうせん Bubblebeam. Check the move list in the own Pokemon window.]
[The item list now reads (from left to right, then top to bottom): モンスターボール Pokeball x2, あなぬけのひも Escape Rope x7, かいのかせき Helix Fossil, きんのたま Nugget, ふねのチケット S.S. Ticket.]
Number of turns thrashing about from Thrash is determined at the same time as damage. Whether it is 2 or 3 times is determined with equal probability.
Because of the way the RNG works, for Thrash on the first turn, it is normally hard to influence the RNG.
To fill up the item list, we pick up a Full Restore. In this place, if we keep pressing A at the same time that a step is taken, the jingle sound is cut out.
We catch a Pokemon here to use Fly. If we don't catch one here, there aren't any more with 3 or less learned moves on it.
Low HP is determined in the game as follows:
If MaxHP is less than 256, then if CurHP*24/5 < MaxHP, then it is considered low HP. (Rounding down, same thing for next.)
If MaxHP is 256 or greater, then if CurHP*6/5 < MaxHP/4, then it is considered low HP. (Verified up to 700.)
Now: CurHP*24/5 = 76. Low HP condition is satisfied.
If CurHP is 17, then 17*24/5 = 81, which is greater than MaxHP. Then Low HP condition would not be satisfied.
Whether we go to left or right, it is the same. (To the right, Rival takes two fewer steps, but player takes two more. Rival and player's speed is the same.)
When exiting the ship, it takes more time, but deathwarp is not used since it restores health.
How Vermilion Gym works: The image is a summary of the gym. Down is entrance, up is Lt. Surge, ○ is trashcan, □ is statue.
Numbers are assigned to the trashcans as above.
When entering Vermilion City in the overworld, a random even number from 0 to 14 (0xE) is chosen, determining the first switch.
If you look in the trashcan with the first switch, it will randomly choose a place for the next switch (max. 4 candidates), which will be the location of the second switch.
Originally (Red and Green), the second switch was selected from the neighboring trashcans. This is not the case in Blue, which is determined as follows.
In Yellow, anything other than 6 or 8 uses the original (such as 4→ 1,3,5,7). If the first is 6 or 8, then the second switch's address attains a random number from 0 to 255.
For this reason, if the value is 15 (0xF) or above, then the second switch doesn't exist at all.
If this happens, select an even number from 0 to 14 (0xE) to place the first switch again.
The explanation was very long. As for a TAS, 8→5 is the fastest. Somehow, 8→7 is 2 frames slower. If anything other than 8, then because of bumping, it causes frame loss.
[Here, obtain the Bike Voucher to get a Bike in Cerulean.]
Somehow, you can use Escape Rope to return to Cerulean.
We manipulate the lower right person to go downward.
It's been a long time, but when selecting a move, by mashing B, we can immediately forget a move.
Thunderbolt. Base power: 95. Type: Electric.
Other effect: Paralyze opponent (10%).
The Thunder Badge is said to increase Speed, but it seems to increase Defense instead.
Instead, the Soul Badge is the one to increase Speed. Even if the order is reversed, that's how it is, so we'll do it that way.
[Nidoking's move list now reads: あばれる Thrash, 10まんボルト Thunderbolt, にらみつける Leer. バブルこうせん Bubblebeam. Check the move list in the own Pokemon window.]
For Rock Tunnel ahead, the right side display will show what it is as if Flash is used, using Lua.
At the end of battle when switching back to map, the blackout timing changes depending on whether or not Flash is used. It divides the recording into 10 parts.
By using Thunderbolt on Geodude for no effect, then letting it use Selfdestruct, its HP gauge empties without waiting, and so it is faster.
Leaving only Tackle remaining for later, it would be good to use Thunderbolt for something else, but then the manipulation would be very difficult.
[The item list now reads: じてんしゃ Bicycle, あなぬけのひも Escape Rope x6, かいのかせき Helix Fossil, きんのたま Nugget, ふねのチケット S.S. Ticket, わざマシン28 TM28, かいふくのくすり Full Restore, ひでんマシン01 HM01, モンスターボール Pokeball.]
Compared to the Lass on the right with 2 Pokemon, the Gambler on the left with 2 Pokemon has fewer lines and different experience, so we beat the Gambler.
It is slower to use Thrash on the first turn because of the effect before attacking.
Until now, we had enough to use Thrash a lot, but from now on until the Pokemon Tower...
since the number of Pokemon owned by opponents is few, then the plan is not to use Thrash.
By the way, the Lass's Pokemon are two Lv. 24 Clefairy.
In this underground tunnel, going down then left is slower than going left then down by 12 frames.
There is an Elixir in here but picking it up is slower. (Also, there is a Nugget.)
Using the Pokedoll to put Marowak to rest is not a proper route, so we don't take it this time. Using it should save 5-6 minutes.
We can pick up TM07 from the Game Center underground hideout coming up, but if we pick it up there, we will have to open the menu once.
To play the role of filling up the item list, we buy two of them. By the way, in Gen. 1, maximum number of different items held is limited to 20.
We fill up the item list so that gym leaders from the second half will not give TMs.
This is a well-known trick for real-time speedruns to buy items to fill up the item list, but for TAS, it isn't necessary.
Buying only X Speed is faster, but the reduction of the time to buy it is not related***
It takes fewer steps to go out the right side. It turns out to be faster if the elevator is not used.
In Yellow, it is faster to enter from the bottom. In Blue, it is faster to enter from the top.
Horn Drill. Type: Normal. Effect: One-hit KO.
I believe this is the fastest for item scrolling.
[Nidoking's move list now reads: 10まんボルト Thunderbolt, あばれる Thrash, つのドリル Horn Drill. バブルこうせん Bubblebeam. Check the move list in the own Pokemon window.]
Even though critical hit/effective messages display once or twice, against 2 Pokemon it is faster to use Thunderbolt instead of Thrash.
In Gen. 1, one-hit KO accuracy depends on the speed.
Even though opponent's level is high, the speed is enough to get one-hit KO.
Bubblebeam could have defeated the opponent here, but it was faster to use it in Cerulean.
