Greeting and welcome to OTEC 180, Research Analysis and Presentations. This is an 8 week
class so it will move quickly. The first 4 weeks will be spent largely on the 4 units
in the textbook which covers Internet Research. We will also review formatting of business
documents and effective writing.
Once we have completed that, all efforts will be geared toward the PowerPoint presentation
and business report which will serve as your final projects in this class. Here are some
milestones for the class:
• Week 3 -- September 8 -- Report topic due
• Week 4 -- September 15 -- Report outline due
• Week 5 -- September 22 -- Draft report due
• Week 6 -- September 29 -- PowerPoint outline due
• Week 7 -- October 6 -- PowerPoint presentation due
• Week 8 -- October 11 -- Report due
There will be more information given each week about the presentation and report; however,
I wanted to make sure you have time to begin thinking about a topic. The topic is up to
you. The only criterion is that it be business related.
The report will be written in the MLA format, which we will cover in class, it must be at
least 5 pages long, plus a Works Cited page, and it will need introduction, body, conclusion,
and recommendation sections.
The PowerPoint will present the major points of your report.
There won't be any tests in this class. The quizzes that accompany the 4 units in your
textbook are provided to assist with learning. They can be taken as many times as you wish
throughout the 8 weeks, as long as you take them the first time by the due date. The score
you receive on your final attempt will be your grade for the quiz.
It's imperative that you stay on top of your assignments. As stated in the syllabus, I
don't accept late assignments unless there is a verifiable emergency. I highly recommend
that you check the week's assignments on Sundays so that you know what is due by the end of
the week. That way you won't have any nasty surprises on the weekend when you want to
do something fun with your family or friends.
I look forward to working with each of you and getting to know you better.
