My name is Katie Elles, and I am the Media Advisor to the Minister of Aboriginal
Affairs and Local Government.
I did my internship at the United Nations in New York. whilst I was
studying Global Media Communications at Melbourne Uni.
Whilst I was working at the United Nations as an intern
I had moved around quite a bit so managed to get lots of different experience
from different departments in
publishing and media and strategic comms so
it was really great experience and sort of gave me a breadth of knowledge.
I think my studies were really helpful it because they dealt with really
current things.
So it was really quite vocational. So whilst I was here and I was studying I was
researching really really
current issues and you know certainly with the UN it was really
helpful because we were looking at current global crises so
when I got over to the UN I was aware of what was really going on in the world
rather than just having a sort of theoretical understanding,
so that real practical understanding of what's currently going on I think has
been really helpful.
What I enjoyed the most was getting internship.
Doing the internship I just think it was just such an amazing opportunity and
I would not have been able to do it if I wasn't studying. So being a Media Advisor
in state government is certainly very challenging role.
We are constantly working to very tight deadlines,
very early mornings, sometimes radio producers waking you up at 6:30 and
all that kind of thing. But it's certainly a very rewarding role because
you can see
you work on a day-to-day basis when you see a story in the papers the next day
you know you worked really hard to get that. So although it is really
challenging it is really
rewarding and I really enjoy it.
