Three Maori youths,
who've all been in trouble with the law,
have staged their own photographic exhibition
as part of a youth programme called Te Korowai.
The photos give their personal view of the education system
that ultimately failed them.
Chris Kalekale, a photographer from Ngati Maniapoto and Tonga.
Three months ago, he was a thief.
He's lucky that he's not in jail.
Chris is one of six youth who learnt photography at Te Korowai,
a programme for troubled youth.
In the beginning, I asked them
what they knew about a camera,
and they said they sold them to make money.
Their exhibition opened at ZEAL in West Auckland.
The NZ education system that failed them
is the theme of their photos.
They told me they find it hard to learn in a school
because it's so structured.
The idea is that art deters jail.
The exhibition will be shown at the Auckland Memorial Museum next month.
