>> AMITA: Any idea how much the fines cost? >> DWANE: I believe it's more than $100 but
I'm not sure. >> AMITA: Have civillibitarians weighed in
on this? >> DWANE: I talked to the A CLU, and they're
concerned about this program because it targets the inner city neighborhoods.
They're particularly concerned about the way they phrase it as increased criminalization.
>> AMITA: Did you talk to the police about why they're not doing curfew sweeps in other neighborhoods in the San Diego
area. >>> Yeah, Lincoln park, city heights and downtown
rank among the highest crime areas in the entire city.
There are places outside of that that it occurs but in general where they do curfew sweeps
is generally where they find a lot of crime. >> AMITA: And do kids know that there is a
curfew? Are they aware that curfews exist?
>> Absolutely, there is a great example of after they started doing curfew sweeps in
southeastern San Diego, they would find that they were arresting a lot of kids but they
weren't given the same numbers, and then in city heights they started picking up these kids
from southeastern San Diego, they figured out it's because the
kids knew that there were curfew sweeps so
they were he moving elsewhere. >> AMITA: Thank you for
speaking to us.
