Everyone who rides a bike to the station knows about it.
The great problem of finding a place to put your bike
NS (Dutch Railways) wants to sort out this problem
by providing free guarded cycle parking Everywhere you look, a sea of bikes. A known
problem by many stations. Outside parking is free, but it can be risky
This morning there was no space so I put my bike against a tree.
I walked around to find a place, but... Underground by the station Amsterdam Amstel
the guarded parking is free for the first 24 hours.
This is nice and big and there are spaces. Above it's different.
The idea is to make the whole journey, door to door, so easy as possible for our travellers.
The Netherlands is a real cycling country. About 40% train passengers arrive at the station
by bike. We want to make the cycle parking at stations
so welcoming as possible If to goes well then NS will expand the free
parking to other locations. Utrecht.
Breda den-Bosch
Where currently you have to pay €1.25 per day
Some still choose for the outdoor free parking. It's simply easier. No need to go underground
which takes time. The people who run the parking are concerned
that more effort will be needed to watch the parking adequately in the future.
Sometimes bikes stay here for six weeks when people go on holiday
In the cycle parking at this station there are altogether about 13000 places.
