Flooding disrupts lives in Romania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Serbia. Incessant rains in Romania have
caused flooding that thus far has claimed at least four lives and forced hundreds of
others to flee their homes. Evacuation has been hampered by flooded streets that have
transformed into rivers. Over 700 buildings and 4,000 hectares of forests have been damaged.
Meanwhile, flooding in Bosnia-Herzegovina has created a potentially fatal situation
where the flooded shores of rivers have caused landmines to move. Officials have been unable
to give adequate advice to citizens as there is no clear way to avoid the landmines and
even mine detectors will not work when the mines are buried under deep soil. In Serbia,
while flood waters have started to receded, around 135 homes in the Belgrade municipality
have been left inundated. The national government is offering financial compensation to aid
families recovering from the floods while also proposing to wave drainage fees for farmers
whose fields have been significantly submerged.
We thank the governments and agencies coming to the aid of residents in need. It saddens
us to know of this disturbance and loss of lives, and we pray for the soon recovery of
citizens’ stability and that our kinder consideration for one another helps minimize
such catastrophes as these
