Pentek PD-1-20 Sediment Filter Hey everyone, Tony the Filter Doctor here.
Today we’re looking at the Pentek PD-1-20. This is an industry standard size cartridge,
approximately 20 inches long by 2 ½ inches in diameter, which means it’s going to fit
into a vast selection of industry standard size filter housings, like for example the
one that you see here. Now, the PD-1-20 is a 1 micron, thermally
bonded polypropylene spun sediment filter. At 1 micron it is extremely dense, making
it a great choice to capture fine sediment and even extra fine sediment. But, beware,
if you have a heavy sediment load or large particle sediment mingled in with your extra
fine sediment, you probably need to do pre-filtration before the water gets to this cartridge or
you may clog it very rapidly because it is so dense.
Now, as a polypropylene cartridge it’s perfect for untreated water because it’s bacteriostatic
and microorganisms cannot live and grow on the filter media. It’s also highly resistant
to chemical attack, making it a perfect choice for commercial and industrial applications.
And because it’s thermally bonded it has a very high temperature rating, up to 175
degrees Fahrenheit. Now, you can’t use a regular filter housing like this, you need
a special high temperature filter housing, but assuming you have the correct high temperature
filter housing, you can use this in a number of high temperature applications.
Now, determining filter life for the PD-1-20 is difficult, because it depends on your unique
circumstance. If you have a heavy load of sediment and you use a great deal of water
you will certainly go through cartridges faster than someone who doesn’t have either of
those conditions. Really, the best way to determine filter life is simply to install
one and pay attention to the number of gallons or the amount of time that the filter lasts.
Then you’ll have a good mark for the next time you put a new filter in.
