The govt has turned to the Serious Fraud Office
to allay some of their concerns with Te Pataka Ohanga.
The financial report
on the Kohanga Reo Trust's spending was released recently
which included an investigation of their business arm Te Pataka Ohanga,
but the opposition says that in spite of the report's findings
putting the trust in the clear, the time has come to clean house.
No misuse of public money,
but not everyone is convinced the issues have been resolved.
What kohanga reo really want to know
is what is Te Pataka Ohanga's function,
and how does the body benefit kohanga reo?
The time has come to clean house.
At eight o'clock last night,
media were called to a press conference
by the Minister of Education and the Minister of Maori Affairs
to release the Audit on Te Kohanga Reo spending.
Hekia Parata says she cannot look into spending
of the subsidiary company Te Pataka Ohanga
as they are a private company.
Te Pataka Ohanga's job is to strengthen kohanga reo,
so it's only right that the corporation should be reviewed.
Now there is a push for the Kohanga Trust
to change its governance
for the betterment and transparency of the children and their families.
Let the board deal to the language side of things,
and leave the management to experts in that field.
The Minister of Maori affairs says
that once the kohanga reo gets itself in order,
their Treaty of Waitangi claim can get back on track.
The minister of education will order another review
to insure that the kohanga reo
has taken on the recommendations from the report.
Irena Smith, Te Karere.
