My name is Garret Zurcher and this is my name sign and I'm a gay man.
I spent the first fifteen, sixteen years of my life essentially silent.
The take home message of my coming-out process was that I
couldn't be in a relationship with a woman and still be a good person
dealing with bullying dealing with violence
it was completely devastating.
going to college just seemed like it wasn't gonna happen
going to college seem like a long shot for me.
I was working I think six jobs in New York City
if it had not been for Point I wouldn't
have had the means or even the conviction that I could go to college
I decided that I would go read the book in the bookstore
because to purchase the book would have depleted my bank account
and it struck me in that moment that
I did need additional support and the Point Foundation
was a way for me to go about getting that support
the Point Foundation
is you know the largest LGBT scholarship fund for
college students of merit.
so to have someone there
who's in it, who's had successs and who is there to help guide
and to mentor me is just invaluable
when I first met her and realized this was someone who is there
with the sole purpose up supporting me, it was pretty life-changing
the Point Foundation showed me that being
someone who is LGBT is not an impediment to success
it broadens just what's possible for me
in ways that I wouldn't have otherwise really conceived or even imagined
I know that unfortunately there are a lot of gender non-conforming youth
who do not go on to higher education
the voices and the stories of
those who don't identify as straight are lost.
we need recognizable leaders across the board
and the Point Foundation helps place leaders in positions
that I recognizable to really help future generations
Point Foundation provides that hope
that a lot of LGBT people
have never felt in their high school careers or maybe their entire life
they provide hope and they provide
network for our community
the Point network is so huge. its nationwide, international even
to me Point Foundation feels like family
it's really become such a beautiful family
the Point Foundation is a beautiful family tree.
the Point Foundation is a beautiful family tree.
LGBT equality is an issue I'm gonna pursue the rest of my life.
I'll be the first person in my family to get a graduate degree to graduate from law school.
I will be starting a doctoral program in sociology at Stanford University this fall
and I we an incoming Point Scholar.
