Hello, my name is Dr. Jonathan Thomas-Stagg
and I'm with the Division of Disability Resources
and Educational Services
or DRES here at the University of Illinois.
And I'm presenting you today with the first video
in a series of videos
that is designed to help students with disabilities
apply for the GRE
when they are requesting accommodations on the GRE.
One thing for me to point out before I begin
is that I do not work for ETS, Educational Testing Service,
that is the company that administers, and scores,
and reports the GRE.
But, I thought it would be helpful to make
these video tutorials to help students with disabilities
understand how they are registering for the GRE
to receive accommodations.
One thing I want to make sure you understand
is the timeline of registering for the GRE
if you are requesting accommodations.
Students with disabilities may be eligible
for accommodations on the GRE.
When you are requesting accommodations on the GRE
you should plan on registering and requesting accommodations
at least eight weeks prior to when you want to take the test.
You could plan on registering and requesting accommodations
more than eight weeks prior to when you want to take the test.
That will give you some leeway and time
to address the situation
if your accommodations, at first, are denied.
Also one thing to keep in mind
is that when you are requesting accommodations on the GRE,
you cannot register online.
With this first video today, I'm going to show you
how to navigate to a couple of important documents
that you will need to look at
when you are registering for the GRE.
I've opened up my favorite browser, Firefox,
so you'll need to open up your favorite browser.
And in the address line, type www.ets.org.
This brings you to the website
of the Educational Testing Service
that contains all the information
you need to know about the GRE.
The first link that I'm going to click on
is in the middle of the page in the center panel.
It's Test Takers with Disabilities.
And this brings you to several other links.
You'll see a pane along the left side
that gives you information about documentation policies,
testing accommodations, tips for test takers, and so on.
The two links that I want to show you today
are both in this link, the GRE Tests.
And the title of this page is "Accommodations for Test Takers
with Disabilities or Health-related Needs."
The first document that I'm going to bring your attention to
is the Bulletin.
There is the 2011-12 GRE
Information and Registration Bulletin.
It's available in a PDF form,
and there's a link for a screen reader version as well.
I'm going to click on the PDF form.
Once this document opens, you will see that this is
all of the information about the GRE and how to register for it.
It is many pages long, it's about 40 pages altogether.
The page that I'm going to direct your attention to first
is page 27.
It's the Computer-Based GRE Revised General Test
Authorization Voucher Request Form.
This is the form that you have to fill out
just in order to be able to take the test.
So, you have to give your name, your address, your city,
your Social Security number, and so forth.
And this is how you pay for the test down here.
There's a- a section that has you
put in your credit card information,
um or gives you information about how to pay by check.
So, to reiterate, in order to apply for the GRE
as a student with a disability and receive accommodations,
you must print out and fill out this form
and then mail it back in.
It gives you the address of where to mail it to
right up here.
Okay, I'm going to close out of this PDF
by clicking on the red X.
Which takes us back to this page
about accommodations for test takers with disabilities
or health-related needs.
And the other important document on this page
is the Bulletin Supplement for Test Takers with Disabilities.
It comes also in a PDF form
and below that there is a screen reader version.
I'm going to open this form...
and you'll see it has a cover page
and a table of contents.
In future videos I will talk to you about how to
complete Part 1, 2, and 3 of this Bulletin Supplement
in order to receive accommodations.
