This is the first day of NCEA exams for students across the country
with English the first and biggest exam to be held.
Our reporter Pere Wihongi went along to Hato Petera
to see how students are preparing themselves there.
A lot of study, a lot of preparation,
a lot of worry.
Exams will have secondary students across the nation stressing.
Some are worried and anxious,
but what can you do?
I told the students to turn that energy to their advantage.
Students of Hato Petera College
have already sat their internal exams,
and the marks they've received for those exams
are being used as a benchmark for the upcoming externals.
NCEA Level 1 almost 80% of students achieved excellence.
Level 2, 65%,
and NCEA Level 3 100% achieved the same result.
143,000 students will be sitting this year's exams
and this school has worked hard to prepare their students.
I'm ready for my Te Reo Maori exam this afternoon.
On the weekend our class went to Te Hana
to prepare for our exams.
For these exams,
we strongly encourage students to strive for excellence
so it's easier for them
to get into universities and earn scholarships.
JT also knows that with his study
he'll be able to reach for the stars.
My goal is to study astronomy
at the Auckland University of Technology.
The last exams for the year
will be held on December 3.
