Soldiers rucking up and down the trail is a common sight on military installations.
Soldiers do the same thing in Alaska--except they do it on snowshoes and skis.
[male speaker] That is a necessary skill set if you're going to be in Alaska.
We are in these kind of conditions for about eight months out of the year.
So if you're not prepared to train in them or operate in them, you can't do what you
need to prepare for any kind of contingency operations.
[Puetz] These soldiers are learning that skill set here at the Black Rapids Training Site
near Fairbanks, Alaska. [marching] [chatter]
[Puetz] Soldiers learn to use snowshoes and skis while carrying a rucksack and weapon.
These skills are necessary to train and fight in Arctic and Subarctic conditions.
