President Bioteau: I am delighted to welcome you,
our new faculty, to Salt Lake Community College.
You are the heart of this institution
and you provide the lifeblood for the learning that happens
for each student who walks through our doors.
Barbara Grover: We welcome our new faculty
to Salt Lake Community College.
More than 60,000 students will visit our many classrooms
and labs in the coming year.
If asked why they come here, most students will say "price,
convenience, location and smaller class sizes."
That's what they say before they get to know us.
But if you ask a graduating student
"What thing surprised you most about SLCC?"
you might hear an answer such as, Laura Snider:
I don't know exactly what I expected but I didn't expect
to have such great faculty.
That's one thing I that I love about this school."
Barbara Grover: They will usually tell you a story
about a faculty member that changed their life,
gave them vision or ambition, and helped them find
and believe in themselves.
Ben Coe: It opened up a new path because I realized
that I found something I was good at
and the constant encouragement
than I received was an absolute gift.
Barbara Grover: Through teaching and learning faculty
and students bring life to this college.
Through education our faculty help a first-generation college
student set a pattern of learning
for generations to follow.
Faculty provide language skills to help those new
to this country to be productive or technical skills
to help prepare a work force to fuel an economy
or to save a life though healthcare training.
Through our faculty the doorway to academic transfer
to four-year institutions
and higher degrees is opened to our students.
Chris Picard: I would like to welcome all of the new faculty
who are joining us as a part of our team.
This is a great place to work and a great place to live
and exciting times are ahead for the community college.
President Bioteau: You will find in your interactions
with your colleagues, through your work
in the Faculty Teaching and Learning Center,
and through engagement with our students, that this is one
of the most vibrant institutions of higher ed not only
in this s tate of Utah, but in our country.
Chris Picard: We are at the forefront
of changing people's lives.
Many of the students that graduate
from high school are coming to us
because they are seeking an avenue into the university
or into the workplace and we are providing that gateway for them.
Deneece Huftalin: Faculty have an amazing role
at this institution.
Research shows, and our students bear this out,
that one of the best things that they can do is connect
with the faculty member, feel engaged in the classroom,
and suddenly they see themselves as a learner.
So you have a vital role in helping students succeed
and feel a part of the Salt Lake Community College community
President Bioteau: Your teaching is so valuable
that every year our foundation awards Teaching Excellence
to outstanding faculty that are nominated by their students.
I look forward to seeing you in those acknowledgements as well.
Chris Picard: Education is changing and changing rapidly.
There are many points of access now --
not only the traditional in-class access
where students come to a place and they sit in a classroom
and a faculty member interacts with them within that classroom,
but of course we've got a very robust selection
of online courses.
We're also are in the throes of developing what is called the
"flipped" classroom model where a good deal
of the instruction is captured within the electronic media
and faculty serve more and more in that role that faculty want
to serve in as mentors, as coaches,
as those that help students develop a greater depth
and appreciation of knowledge.
Deneece Huftalin: Your role as faculty is really to focus
on your content and your pedagogy
and helping students succeed.
We are behind the scenes
in Student Services trying to help you do that.
So we have amazing resources in Enrollment Services
to help students drop or change classes.
We have phenomenal resources in Academic and Career Advising
to help students map out an academic plan,
to help them Identify internships
that they might be interested in and to then have them navigate
with you to find those placements,
and we have phenomenal resources
in the Disability Resource Center for students
who may need an accommodation and can work
with faculty to make that happen.
So I would encourage you to reach out to us,
to look at the website to make sure
that you understand the amazing resources we have.
One of the most frustrating things to me is
when a student leaves and a faculty member says to me,
"I wish I'd known about that because if I'd known
about that I could have connected them
and they could have been successful."
Chris Picard: We need to figure out ways to ensure
that our students are completely successful and what
that means is we give them what they need
to successfully transfer to one of our state universities
or to enter the workforce and shine.
President Bioteau: We also believe that innovation
in a community college is vital.
It is so vital and critical that we have every year an Innovation
of the Year award where we will provide seed funding
for remarkable, engaging, courageous innovations
in teaching and learning here at the college.
Deneece Huftalin: Welcome to Salt Lake Community College.
Thank you for your great time and commitment to students
and have a great year.
Barbara Grover: SLCC is proud of the student
and faculty diversity that bring a richness of learning
and experience to the institution.
You are joining the ranks of faculty that work in partnership
with administration and staff
to make Salt Lake Community College a unique
and innovative premier community college in the nation.
Our 104 program areas enable our students
to talk Philosophy while creating 3d solid models
for engineering design/build enterprises
or to learn Biotechnology while winding carbon fiber strands
for composite structures;
to learn to fly helicopters while getting their
business degree.
Welcome to a world
where academic excellence has made us a significant producer
of associate's degrees-consistently
in the top 10 in the nation, number 3 last year
for number of degrees awarded!
Thank you for joining us as we change lives
and forward the vision of this great institution.
