One of the topics is investigate the motivations
people have either for becoming organ donors of for
not becoming organ donors. What we can do is
why don't we go right ahead into Academic Search premier because that is
when they do their citations, they have a tendency to call their
databases EBSCO Host, and EBSCO Host is the name of
the company that puts all these different databases together. But
Academic Search is the actual name of the database
and when you see this just take a look up here
it says 'searching Academic Search Premier' and then over here you could
actually choose databases and you get the whole, big, long list
and then you could switch back and forth
between different databases that particular
company has put together yeah this is a very basic
search screen. You can click on 'Full Text' you can
also click on 'Scholarly (peer review) Journals. If you have this box checked
then anything you put in that search box
will all be scholarly peer review
But let's take a look at the advanced search mode
because that gives you a few more
different things that you can actually play around with and you have more
options that way let's take a look and
she how we would search this first one. We will go through each of
these different topics so that all of you working
on these different topics will have a sense of how use the words, the data
bases, to get the stuff that you need. So
the first one its something about motivation
and organ donors so
we could put in...and I'm going to explain what I'm doing here
and what I'm doing on that first word, you'll notice that
I'm not spelling out motivation. I'm shortening it and another word for that, a fancy word is
called Truncation. Truncation means you shorten, and
I'm using the asterix in this case, which is a wild card, so
that is giving an instruction. Remeber that you are talking to a computer
your not talking to like friends and the computers don't
always, cant figure out all these
big long sentences that people have the tendency to put into
these boxes. So that means you really have to take
a look at your topic and then pick out the
most important words. Keywords
that you really want to focus in on. In that sentence
we picked out motivation. I shortened it,
I truncated it, I put a wild card so that
gives the instruction to the computer look all possible
endings after the'v'. That's
why the wild card is there. So you could have 'Motive' 'Motives'
'Motivation' 'Motivations'
all kinds of different endings. That is what I'm doing there.
Now, the other thing is in the next box, I
have 'organ donor' and you notice I put quotation
marks around those two words. Anybody have an idea why I'm doing that?...Why would I put quotation
marks around those two words? So basically
its Phrase searching because if you don't put the quotation marks around
It could be something to do with organ, like a piece of music,
Music Organ, and a donor, somebody
donated an organ to a church so
that's why you want to put organ donor together
to keep those two words associated together and also
you can see I haven't asterisk again, i am shortening
I'm truncating that word 'donor' becuase i could get 'donor'
'donors' 'dontating' Now these are two
different concepts that we're talking about you know that
I'm joining them together with that connector called
'and' and that 'and' is telling the computor to do something. Its telling the computor
'look for everything in this database that has something to do
with motivations and donor,
organ donor. Both of those ideas
have to appear within the result list. Okay? So thats what we're doing here
and just know
I'm not going to put full text and I'm not going to do scholarly
peer reviews yet because i want to see how many
we get. Yeah 85. Lets take a
look at this. 'BioEhtics' is the name of the journal
It was published September 2012 which is really recent
it tells you that it is 6 pages long.
look at the title, highlighted.
'Motive' see we have 'Motives' so motives came up
and organ is another part of our search term
and we're talking about donation, and here's two propsals
So its an academic journal. Academic journal means its a scholarly peer review, and it looks like its full
text. Analyse what is below it. It is full text
the other thing I want you to take a look at
is subjects of the actual topics. That article
has to be about these particular subjects. It
really could helped you figure out whether or not
you have motivation so you have psychology
they even have something about methodology. They get into organ donors
they get into decision-making. These words can
also help you refine and maybe expand your topic
maybe even help you focus on aspect of your topics
so the one below it also gives
something about- again decision-making keeps coming up again
so you know this might be something
you know people do it out of the goodness of their hearts, maybe they're not going to do it for
other reasons. so you get decision making and again, its another academic journal
academic journal In this case
its full text and its noted 'PDF'. 'PDF' means
it's almost like you have a journal in your hands and you make a photocopy
of it,
you'll notice the one below looks like it might be in Spanish
the database obviously have a lot of international things in it too
so so if anybody is very good
bilingual Spanish that
to think about over here life which
would go back the then search
actually ok I think box which
actually like but just or that
you happy box that would be no clock
lot of good stuff here mystical yeah just
click on that title this title
up art mixed up iced
except
so tough times up this case
a safe source source means
from so charcoal spy
left only subject
noticed actually
on what the state's one
like hitched as in psychology
that shows up of everything
hefty with motivation psychological aspect
H here stealth
cells so you like Intel
with that subject yes
but that nest
the left they get make the system work
is for all each work procurement
so that might be a truck think Bell when
one at almost like donors
ok you're basically get these things
light up donation I purchased so
the fight term way think about the topic
aspects about the top go back skull
first yeah every have this particular case
all text put on this noticed this particular database
most think sex have the option
I'll emailing yourself so what we sent you
most searches find an article that you really like
email to your cell
event get your five pretty quickly that was the other thing
what use skimming through article make no
up therapy site with this article because they're gonna show up here
the Preferences or family worksite
there maybe just maybe it will fast way okay
here that I'll really on your topic you can see
Ellis prefer to live in the paper
after the show holdings I'll
and then getting their stately so within one
paper you pop like 35 well I'm
if I play here
