[♫ Thanksgiving Recipes: Side Dishes and Turtle Pumpkin Pie Recipe ♫]
So, it's Thanksgiving morning, you slept in,
you're feeling very relaxed. Why?
Because your sister's hosting the family feast this year,
which means the pressure's off.
I'm Tracy Metro for the Kraft Kitchens with some great ideas
for what you can bring to Thanksgiving dinner
and how to get it there in one piece.
Let's say you're asked to bring something to tide people over
until dinner's ready. Well, this gorgeous 6-layer dip will do the trick nicely
for the whole family and then some.
The first layer is a mix of cream cheese, sour cream, and a little bit of Miracle Whip®.
On top of that, some salsa, then some shredded mozzarella cheese,
chopped tomatoes, green peppers, and finally some chopped green onions.
People will love this.
Now, of course you have to get the dip to the party,
so here's a great, easy idea for doing that.
Of course, you're going to want to cover it with plastic wrap, nice and tight.
Then just put your dip in the bottom of a shallow box
and nestle newspaper around it to keep it from sloshing all around the backseat.
Now let's say you're going to your sister's house, and she lives in
Cleveland and you live in Columbus, and you're going to be driving a couple hours.
All you have to do is lay one of these nifty ice blankets on top of it,
or you could put it underneath, and it'll stay nice and cold.
Ooh. Don't forget the crackers.
Okay. Now if you're asked to bring a salad, I have a truly special
bacon spinach salad. It's fresh spinach, which is great this time of year,
red onion, some sliced mushrooms, hard-boiled eggs, and crumbled turkey bacon.
And we're using a light Catalina dressing on this salad.
So we're just going to cover it with plastic wrap, just like we did our dip.
Then just put it in a box.
Now here's a nifty little trick to make sure that your salad
doesn't move all over the box. You take your salad dressing
and anchor it in there.
For long-distance travel, it's best not to assemble your salad at home,
but instead put all of the ingredients in individual storage bags
and seal them up nice and tight so they can travel there separately.
Then just place everything in a large insulated bag,
Now, if you get to bring dessert, this is your chance to make
a huge splash with a turtle pumpkin pie.
This one's an easy refrigerated pie.
So I've got this graham cracker crust with some caramel ice cream topping
and some pecans that I've already put inside.
So we have two packages of Jello® vanilla instant pudding,
and we're going to add a cup of milk, a cup of canned pumpkin,
some cinnamon, nutmeg, and a cup and a half of thawed-out Cool Whip®
to make it all nice and fluffy.
You want to really fold in the Cool Whip®.
Be real gentle with it so that it stays nice and airy.
Once you're done, smooth out the top, and then one hour in the fridge.
Finish the pie with more Cool Whip®, caramel, and pecans, and you're good to go.
Now getting this beauty to the party, believe it or not,
is a cinch because there are plastic domed cake and pie carriers out there
that you can buy. And here's a nifty little trick:
Wet a paper towel and put it on the bottom, and that will keep your pie from sliding around.
And again, if you're traveling a long way with the pie,
you're going to want to use an insulated bag.
Have a great holiday and be ready to accept thanks as well as give them.
