A new segment of the Bayshore Bikeway is coming to San Diego Bay.
A groundbreaking ceremony featuring Port of San Diego Commissioners, county
officials, city leaders,
the San Diego Association of Governments and other partners
was held in Chula Vista on August 5th, 2011.
This effort has been a significant effort on the part of all five cities
around the San Diego Bay including the San Diego Unified Port District.
With the beginning of construction of this section we're going
to see about 1.8 miles of this bikeway completed.
The bikeway is a 24-mile route that circles San Diego Bay.
Currently, 13 miles of that are bicycle paths — with the rest being
on-street sections.
While the bikeway is recognized for its recreational appeal,
it can also serve as an alternative form of transportation.
When you think about bicycling as transportation,
we think of this is an expensive park project. But, if you thought of it in
terms of
what it costs to do transportation, this is a really cheap way
to build infrastructure to get around.
In San Diego there really can be no excuse
for not having
great bicycle infrastructure.
We believe in multi-modes of transportation and
this is just one of them. SANDAG Board has opted to put a large amount of money
into bicycle and pedestrian activities,
not just recreational, but also to commute to work. And
we are very happy to be a partner with the county, the cities, the Port and
everybody else that really cares about putting projects like this together.
This new section in Chula Vista
will run along the east side of the railroad tracks known as the old
Coronado Belt Line.
Come 2012,
another section will be built that will connect National City with San Diego.
Once the bikeway is complete, cyclists will have the unique experience of circling
the entire bayfront on a path separate from the roadway.
What today's project does is it says the bayfront is important to everybody.
There's walking paths, jogging paths and bicycle paths
that unify, not just Chula Vista, but unify Chula Vista, National City
Imperial Beach, Coronado and the County of San Diego.
