Tropical storm Conson lashes the Philippines. The storm, which made landfall on late Tuesday,
July 13 has caused at least 18 fatalities with nearly 60 people missing after it struck
Manila and surrounding regions. Winds of up to 120 kilometers-per-hour caused damage to
some 500 houses along with office buildings and other structures, as streets were inundated
and residents grappled with blackouts throughout the city that suspended classes and closed
businesses as well as government offices. Meanwhile, over 3,000 passengers were stranded
as the Manila International Airport Authority canceled more than 70 flights, and the Philippine
military said 13 people were rescued in the Pandan and San Andres areas, while the Philippine
Coast Guard are coordinating with local port officials to ensure the welfare of stranded
passengers and vessels. President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III asked the country’s
Department of Social Welfare and Development to ensure shelter and provisions for the storm-affected.
Our appreciation, Your Excellency, Philippine officials and personnel, for your initiatives
to assist the storm-stricken people. Our sympathies are with those who have suffered loss, as
we pray that such weather intensities may be curbed through humanity’s efforts to
stabilize our ecosphere
