(Music) A great technique for ensuring
the accessibility of your iBooks documents is to make sure that you use
styles such as headings to provide a proper structure. This technique
will benefit students with cognitive disabilities by splitting your document into
smaller, more manageable sections and it will also make the
structure of the information more explicit for those students. So let's take a look
at how we can add a structure to our document using styles such
as headings. (Music)
So the first thing I'm going to do is select my heading text
here's a heading one. Now a lot of times what people will do is
go to the Format Bar and just make the text bold and
maybe change its size. Unfortunately this is only changing the appearance
of the text. It's not really making it into a proper style.
So I'm going to undo that and again with the text selected
the proper way to add a style is to click on the Styles
button, this is the second button from the left on the Format Bar,
and then there's some predefined styles here that are based on the template
you've chosen in iBooks Author but if you want to create your own headings
go down to heading one for this first style
and then I will scroll over and again
here I have a heading level 2 with the text selected
I will once again click on the Styles button
scroll down until I find heading 2.
Now you're not stuck with the appearance of these headings based on the template
you've selected. One thing you can do is you can go up to
View, Show the Styles Drawer and then you
you can modify the appearance of your styles. So for instance if I want
to change the color, with the text selected
I'll change the color for that style in my document
and I'll go into the Styles Drawer, I'll click on the triangle
next to that style and I'll choose Redefine
Style from Selection and now anytime I apply
heading level 2 it's going to be in that red color.
So again, this is the proper way to create styles
in iBooks Author, using the Styles button in the Format Bar
rather than just selecting the text and changing it's appearance
so that it's bold and it has a different size. (Music)
If you prefer to work on the text in
another program such as Pages, you can still apply styles
in that program and those styles can be imported when you add that document
into iBooks Author. So here i've opened
a document in Pages and I have a heading that I want to apply
so it's a heading level 1. With the text selected
just like in iBooks Author I'll click on the Styles button and then
I'll choose the proper heading there so I'm going to make this into a heading 1
and now you can see that it's bold and it's a little bit larger.
I'll scroll down in my document and I have a
heading level 2 and so again I can go into the Styles button
and choose the appropriate style from the list.
As with iBooks Author I can go up to View
Show the Styles Drawer
and then I'm able to modify my styles
in much the same way I did in iBooks Author so I can change the
color and other aspects of that style's appearance.
And to import the Pages document into my iBooks Author
one what I need to do is be able to see
that document on my hard drive, so here I've moved the
iBooks Author window over a little bit and I can see my Pages document
that has the styles in it right here on my Desktop and then all I need to do
is perform a drag and drop, so I'll drag my Pages document
from the Desktop or any location on my hard drive right into the table
of contents for my iBooks Author document. When I let go
I'm going to see a menu popup and here I can select a layout
for the imported text and in this case I'm going to choose section text
and then the important thing is to make sure that Preserve
document paragraphs on import which is the option at the bottom is
selected so there's a checkbox next to it and then I'll go ahead and click on Choose.
And here I can see
that the styles from the Pages document have been imported and properly applied.
Now here's a popup and it's just letting me know that some
of the fonts that were in my Pages document have been substituted and
the reason for that is that not all of the fonts on your computer are going to be supported on
the iPad so iBooks Author has gone ahead and substituted some of the fonts
that were unsupported in my Pages document with ones that
are in iBooks Author.
So again, if you prefer to use Pages to work on your
text you can still apply styles such as headings and then when
you import that document from Pages into iBooks Author those styles will
be preserved. (Music)
