Hi everyone, Melissa here at CloudMom. So I read an article on the blog, Free-Range
Kids, saying that a mother in Manchester, Connecticut right near where I grew up was
arrested for allowing her seven and 11-year old children to walk down the street and buy
a pizza. This just totally got me thinking, and I actually talked to my husband about
this, and we're asking ourselves when are we gonna get our precious... Allow our precious
little chickens out of the coop? What is gonna be that point? The story also sparked my interest
because I grew up right next to Manchester, Connecticut. This is where I used to go to
buy my yearly pair of Jordache jeans in the late '70's. You guys are probably too young
to remember that whole thing, but it was a big deal back then. So anyway, a very, very
nice town. I haven't been back there recently, but I know for me speaking personally, that
I don't think, definitely not seven and not by age 11, am I gonna be ready to let my first,
precious, little chicken out of the coop. I live in a place where cars are getting on
and off the highway and traffic is fierce, so that would be my greatest worry. I'm trying
to think. I think 14 is high school. I hope it's gonna be before that. Maybe 12, maybe
13, and as I hear myself say this, and I talked to my husband about it, he's even more over-protective
than I am, I realized that even though I don't think this about myself, I'm actually not
very "free-range", I'm actually kind of over-protective. So I thought I would ask other moms and other
parents out there, especially parents with older kids, what are you doing with this?
When are you allowing your chickens out of the coop? And what is it like where you live?
Are you in a big city like me or a small cul-de-sac, and how has that played into your decision?
Let me know. Please comment on my blog on CloudMom. You can also tweet me at CloudMom,
