Hi everyone, my name is Katie Dennesen and I'm an artists out of San Diego, California.
Today I'd like to share with you a painting that I just finished titled follow thy heart,
now this piece is very similar to a shadow box, it just doesn't have glass in the front.
If you look at it, there's the background, between the heart and the background there
is a spacer and there are lights, so yes it does light up, and we'll get to that part
but first of all, this painting is basically about following your heart and doing what
you want to do and knowing that only you hold the key to your heart which in fact there
is a skeleton key that is attached to this piece. I like to attach those a lot, I don't
know why I have this thing with skeleton keys, I even have tattoos of them. To me they're
just mysterious and they are a symbol of secrecy. On this piece on the background you'll see
that there are daffodils now the reason that I painted daffodils on here is because they
are a symbol of promise and optimism as well as new things to come in your life so if someone
was going to have a baby or start a new job, you would buy them daffodils. The only thing,
is that you never give someone a single daffodil. You always give them, multiple daffodils otherwise
they're a symbol for bad luck, so on the other side there is what;'s called a prodeia flower,
now I didn;t know this but I did some research on the prodia and they are actually one of
the oldest flowers in existence. There are more than 3 million years old. The reason
that I put the prodeia is because they symbolise strength and courage, so on this piece there
is also a couple of Fragiles on the background. Obviously the heart is such a fragile thing
and I know many of us, and I'm not the only one has given our heart a little too much
or more than we had planned and ended up getting ourselves hurt in the end. There's also a
butterfly. I know it's kind of he=ard to see over in the corner, the lightening isn;t real
good, but obviously butterflies symbolise change. They go through metamorphosis so without
further ado, I'm going to light this thing up for you. So there you go. Also the cool
thing that I like about this piece is that if you look on the heart, there's gold that's
around here. I actually took copper wire and I bent it and spray painted it gold and attached
it to the heart, so there;s a lot of different elements in this piece, so let me see if I
can get it up a little closer to you so you can see it, and in my opinion the video doesn't
do it any justice. It looks gorgeous, you can't even see the colours in the background
on this piece, but this it it, and if you also look inside the keyhole there's no way
you're going to be able to see it through the video but if you look into the keyhole
on this heart it says follow thy heart, so this is my piece it is done with acrylic and
there is a super high gloss on top of all of this which is why it's so glossy, but when
you see it in person it looks amazing because it;s so glossy, so I just ant to say thank
you for taking the time to take to look at this piece with me and listen to the meaning
behind it, this artwork is for sale at skaptart.com.
