They say BIG Data is of course is the oil of the 21st century, this is a major new resource
that allows us the create jobs, to create growth, to govern better to solve problems
it is the new info structure that we have as a result collaboration is going to be absolutely
vital to how we use it. First of all it's developing the tools the technology that allows
us to gather this data, collect it, process it, visualize it, that is going to be done
both by academia and industry. We need to bring together simple not people trained in
data science and engineering but also people trained in the social sciences and policy
even the humanities in history and to be able when brought together to take a look at the
data and spot those insights. For that we need a lot of diverse and multidisciplinary
expertise to understand really what we are seeing and turn that into actionable insights.
When we are able to make data available and back to and visible to each of us it allows
us to make better decisions about what we buy what we shop what we eat and that can
arrange from both using that data to drive better choices about our own health and wellbeing
so to drive more ethical socially conscious choices. We can have better what are called
choice engines that allow me as a consumer and as a citizen to maximize what matters
to me. My preferences which may not be the same for everyone else and I think that is
the promise of BIG Data it is not that it replaces regulation but it allows us to customize
and supplement regulation as a way to organize how we make those choices, how we make our
decisions and where we put our trust as consumers and citizens.
