>>Erik: When did you write your first blog? >>Mark: I launched my blog, which was called
whatevs.org in January 2002. I had been working with Beyond Interactive for a stretch of time
and when the dot com explosion happened, or the bust happened, people slowly started getting
laid off in various ways at our company. I got laid off originally from there in May
2001 and spent a summer floating around looking for jobs trying to figure out the next step
in my life would be. One of the things I always had enjoyed doing was writing. I had written
emails and things like that. I had done end of year awards type things. I called them
the Grahmmy Awards. Mark Graham. Grammy. Makes sense. No trademark infringement there, I
promise. I had always wanted to start a website. I had tried a couple times with friends over
the years, trying to get people to commit and build a little website when they were
new. I never could get them to join with me, for whatever reason, so I started my own.
I picked up an HTML for dummies book and spent a couple days during unemployment searching
for jobs learning HTML and I hand coded my site. This was before things like Blogger
and blog publishing tools like that were really kind of widely available and mainstream. I
tried to at that point in time twice a week while I was still looking for work. Then,
once some of the tools came in, I discovered Blogger as publishing tool probably in middle
part of 2002, I rebuilt my website. It gave me a way to publish on the fly from anywhere.
I didn`t have to be at home. I could be at work, or at a friendÕs house, and go from
there. So, I started doing that in March 2002. I would say I blogged every day consistently
probably through latter part of 2006.
