[cheering and applause] >> good evening and welcome to manor of
speaking, another exciting episode of downton abbey. We
will dissect it and take it apart. You ask call us on the

public media, st. John flynn. And robert patten, is back. She
may be with gold busters consulting, alice ferris is with
us. And the always knowledgeable and lovely helen mann is filling
out the couches with us all. That didn't sound right, dit? >>
I'm not sure I liked it. (Laughing). >> Hello, everybody.
And just in a few minutes we will be visiting with gareth
neame, he knows where all the bodies are buried. [00:02:05] -K

robert is off to america to bail tout a's playboy brother.
Leaving bates to tend to his wife. Dowager countess is nursed
back to health. It's back to london for edith and rose, so
she can continue her budding row plans with jack, and rose, so
she can have an abortion. Mrs. Hughes warns green that she has
his number. Green reveals that he went to the servant's hall,
during dame nellie's recital, which earns him a pensive stare
from mr. Bates. Mr. Green! Get it, on a boat, jack and rose,
titanic? Here is the poll question. Besites edith which
one of the crawley women having the there worst time this eke
week, is she going to the pigs? B, is she going to dowager why
countess? Into our conversation, I think I've had too much
caffeine today. I'm going a mile a minute. What did you think of
tonight's episode alice? [00:04:25] >> I think the most
favorite time was the competition among the three
gentlemen for mary's attention and she just sighed. Is. >> Are
any of those wore think of her st. John? >> I like mr. Blake
but we don't know enough about him. >> Over to this side. >>
Certainly not gillingham. >> Do you remember who mathier brought
to the house, mr. Pamouk. Got to be careful. Who are you rooting
for? >> I'm not sure who I'm waiting for. The white night on
the stallion. >> I'm waiting for sown else. >> Go through a mud
bath with lady mary. >> Let's talk about the pig. >> Saving
something for later. >> What do you think about the whole pig
thing? What about that? >> Well, I think it's appropriate for the
time in history and for the need for the estate. But what's so
brilliant about this estate, is they figure out how to break
through a character's rigidity, and that's how they broke
through mary's it was wonderful. >> You hoped that they would
make a joke about the women who had just entered the room. The
pigs arrived and then the dowager. >> Ernie! >> I'm trying
here folks. We have been talking about this show every week, what
more do we have to say about it? We thought about, there was a
lot we could have done for history of history but one just
happened to squeal out at us. The little tale about, what is
the importance of all of these pigs? So here is the story of
the, in our history 101. ‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™ ‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™
‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™ [00:06:31] [ knock knock ] ‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™
‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™ ‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™ ‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™ >> the tamworth
pig, sandy back or just tam, is originating from tamworth
england. Make it one of the closest breeds to european
forest swine. Sir robert peel, bacon pig because of its ability
to achieve a high body mass without having much actual fat,
tam pig lets usually adjust to human interaction and enjoy the
attention of humans. At the turn of the last century tams were
well established not only in the united kingdom, but australia,
new zealand, canada and the u.S. The breed grew up so large in
canada that they made up 10% of the population in that country.
Today, the breed is considered threatened in the u.S. And
vulnerable in the u.K, less than 1700 registered breeding females
in the country. That's history 101. And I hope you learned
something about those pigs. [Applause] >> all right I will
be honest. What we should have done our history 101 this week
about was lloyd george because they keep mentioning him so
much. I thought we would break that pattern. Explain a little
about lloyd george. >> Well st. John and I would break into a
chorus of lloyd george knew my father. [00:08:33] >> You want
to hear that? Take the lead. >> It was a joke and two lines.
Lloyd george new my father, father new provide george, sung
to onward, christian soldiers. He was known for being something
of a lady'sman. So when they said father there was a wink,
because they knew my mother. Lloyd george knew me mother. >>
I thought his father really knew lloyd george. But I was wrong
about that. He was the prime minister? >> Interesting times.
>> The end of his prime minister -- ship. >> He was bounced for
selling honors. >> Which is interesting when you mention the
tea pot dome scandal. >> Which next week we'll explain that to
you, it's coming. Don't worry. Lord g is gone off to america.
And so that leaves the women in charge, the inmates in charge of
the asylum. Story lines that grabbed your minds this week?
Laughter in the back there. What did you think? >> I thought that
the bringing back of dillingham was very interesting. First of
all, you see bates has *** in his eyes. But also when mrs.
Hughes told him she would kill him, I have absolutely no doubt
in my mind that she meant every word of it. >> Oh! The blood
thirsty lady. We get our tweets in a very high tech way, get
them from our butler, so welcome mr. Rodgers. Speaking about
interaction from our audience, I had notice that since I was a
lord of the manor, he should be rodgers, not mr. Rodgers? How do
you feel about that? [00:10:41] >> I'm not comfortable with
change milord. >> We're comfortable with that. Thank
you. >> You bet your bacon. [ Laughter ] >> Our first tweet. I
hope thomas falls off this ship! Thank you for that insightful
comments. Mr. Blake is awfully bossy for a pig wrangler. But
you like him? >> I didn't say I liked him. I think he's
interesting. >> Bigger kiss for the puppy than lady gran tham.
Grantham. People who know a lot about this show come and visit
us from week to week and we have a wonderful one, he happened to
write the forward for a brand-new book, behind the
scenes of downton abbey, executive producer are of
downton abbey and we have him, gareth neame. From across the
pond. Hello mr. Neame. >> Hi. >> How are you doing? >> Very well
thank you. >> We have to say thank you for an amazing show
that has had us sitting at the edges of our couches and chairs.
>> Thank you very much. >> You've taken us on a rough road,
sybil and matthew. And then the ***. >> I think people think
the show is all about social manners and etiquette and rules,
and there's a soapy quality and interaction of these
characteristics but as you can say, we've had twists and turns
right from lady took poor mr. Pamouk to her bedroom. It was
part and parcel of the show. [00:12:43] >> As I understand
it, you've been to the show, at the conception of it, everyone
talks about julian fellowes, he writes its but you were there
from when it began. >> Julian is the creator and writes every
episode, but it is my job as producer to come up with the
ideas and I went to him and tried to encourage him, persuade
him to come and make the show with me. So yeah, I was the
first person on the project I guess even before him
technically speaking. >> How much of it came out of the idea
of gosford park? How similar was that? >> A large part of it was
inspired by gosford. I knew julian and we were due for a
catch-up. A lot of good ideas for television come from the
movies. It can be a good source of inspiration for tv shows. And
of course difference for the tv show is you have all that
narrative space, you have multiple episodes to grow the
characters and one gets connected to the characters.
Although dramatically you can start from a similar place on a
tv show or movie, the narrative dramatic structure is very
different. I thought gosford was a good place to begin a series.
>> You were right with that idea weren't you? >> One doesn't
always get it right. Most things don't work the way you plan
them. But this show of course exceeded, not only did it
achieve what we hoped, it achieved much more than we
expected. >> The show also has a guinness book of records honor
too. [00:14:45] >> The most critically followed snow on
television, or perhaps we were overtaken by breaking bad. >>
Look forward to your talking to us again. Thank you very much.
>> Thank you. [Applause] >> and gareth neame, executive producer
of downton abbey. And at a bookstore near you or online
near you. It's always fun to hear what folks have to say. We
get a chance to talk with gareth but speaking with you. Each week
we invite a studio audience into our manor house. Mr. Roks is in
the audience. >> Yes, we have a question from lead tiffany
milord. >> I just find it interesting that mrs. Hughes
says she's not afraid of burglars, even though she'
around telling everyone anna's been attacked by one in the
house. >> Thank you very much. She's told everyone, the cover
story, someone broke into the house and *** this poor girl
downstairs. I know carson didn't hear this, just leave the key in
the door, they can let themselves in. Or whoever. >> I
noticed that too and i thought that exact same thing. Wait a
minute, that doesn't jive up with the cover story. >> That
shows the confidence that people had that they were in a safe
place. >> He is telling people a man was just in the house. We
don't know who it was. >> She's coming in her mind from that
safe place, she knows who the *** was. >> Could this be the
flaw in it all. Could somebody piece it together because she's
so -- [00:16:46] >> I don't think so. >> It's unraflg the
story. >> The story is coming apart. >> But not because of
anything mrs. Hughes has said. >> I'm not happy with mrs.
Hughes. She tells everyone, it's not my secret to tell but since
you are on -- >> question from lady pat my lord. >> There was a
reference to a second ms. Tangueray, I didn't get that
reference. >> We have a professor of english literature.
Known as the proper. >> It was a plan by arthur wing panero. The
daughter discovers her mother's fortune was made by running
growth els. -- Are brothels. >> I see someone dressed almost as
elegantly as you are. >> Yes milord, a question from ms.
Julie ann. >> Who is more fashionably dressed, edith or
lady joan. >> I think with rose it's not quite her wearing the
fashion, i think the fashion is wearing her. >> I think rose is
still very much being portrayed as a young woman, not coming
out. >> She's coming out in london, if you know what I'm
saying. >> But a young woman' clothes. >> Talking about
characters, and some of the actors and see what they think
of their defining character, say what was the moment that changed
them and made them who they are. That is what we're going to look
at in this week's behind the scenes. [00:18:58] >> I think
that with mary it was really that moment with pamouk. >> He's
dead, I think he's dead. In your room! >> She was suddenly
damaged goods and not perfect anymore. So she kind of lost
control a little. >> When he was outed last year, the
ramifications and the impact that had on everyone, not just
summers. >> I'm not foul, mr. Carson. I'm not the same as you
but I'm not foul. >> He doesn't have this huge burden. He's
final reply set himself free. >> Patrick's death for me was the
way in. >> Then going to marry him is nothing better. >> That's
a hard thing osay. >> Edith would have taken him wouldn't
you? >> Yes, I'd have taken him. If you had given me the chance
I'd have taken him like a shot. >> The nastiness she had within
her came from this place of pain and longing for someone who
didn't think of her in that way. And then similarly, with in
season three when I see her as jilted, I think it's a huge
thing for her and really, redirected the path she was
going to take in life. >> It helped me meeting mr. Bates,
yes. >> I'm anna, the head house maid. >> How do you do. >> I'm
ms. O'brien, her ladyship's maid. You better come along with
us. >> That absolutely has shaped her and shaped her as we
kno ‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™ ‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™ ‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™ ‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™‚ô™
[00:21:08] [applause] >> while we were watching that in the
midst mrs. Hughes came up, or mrs. O'brien. I do replies mrs.
O'brien. Does anyone miss her? >> Why? >> Some boos and hisses.
>> Question milord. >> I want to know if julian fellowes consults
with the actors, how with lady mary react to this or lord l
grantham react? >> They know the characters, pretty much the
script is created and written and distributed to the actors.
Then as julian fellowes says, they have a magic with the words
and bring it to life. In a sense they craft what they're saying
but it all comes from julian. Any insight? >> Yes, I do have a
little bit of insight. Earlier in the show I do the pledge
events for downton abbey nationally. >> When you see them
break into a pledge break, this is woman who asks for your
support. And she does it all across the country. Not just for
us here. >> Yes. And the one thing I thought was very
interesting is even the producers of those pledge breaks
did not know what was happening in the series. And so they told
us, well we've heard from the people, julian snroaz people.
Snroaz -- fellowes's people. >> Those breaks were taped before
the end of season 3. >> About hath thou dies. >> I didn't know
that. >> But you had to do the breaks. Explain that. >> We were
told, something bad happens in the last episode. We think
somebody dies, that's all we were told. Ing. [00:23:14] >>
Okay, do it again. Sadder. >> Sadder, yes. >> We need you to
be really sad. Okay, you smiled just a little bit. That was a
little too happy. >> But the whole time you don't know that
matthew is gone. >> As soon as the series started running
hereby in the u.S., there was a leak, of course, and you think
oh no, I know who died and we weren't sad enough. We had to go
back after the series aired and retape those breaks. >> And now
they are properly sad. Another question? There from lady rachel
milord. >> It are reminds me a lot of mary and matthew. Do you
think that's important, do you think they're telling us
something about mr. Blake? >> To the professor. >> Beatrice and
benedict, shakespeare's lovers, you get along better if you
fight with your spouse. At least for drama. There's nothing more
boring than a happy marriage in drama. That's why they have
split up anna and mr. Bates. I think that's the answer. You
feel like you've got an equal. And when mary actually splashes
him back, he laughs. He has a big laugh and that causes her to
laugh and they both take it in the right way, it's a wonderful
way of thinking about courting. >> And one more question. This
is going to have to wrap us up. >> Lady ann maria, milord. >> I
wonder if the divine right accorded to the king applied to
them as well? >> No, I don't think so. I think it was the
monarch that was ordaind of god. I don't think the air stock
aristocrasy. The divine right didn't extend below the royal
family. [00:25:22] >> I have a divine right to say to you,
we're outs of time. We have some business. Poll question was
who's having the worst week, we need to find out which woman is
having a bad week, was it ladies mary, the dowager or -- the
dowager for being stricken with bronchitis. Isobel. We are going
to think our guests, first of all we do want to thank over on
the couch alice and st. John and our lovely mood lighting, there
it goes, back again. Their personality brighten up this
place. And then of course over to helen and the professor, back
together again. Like reuniting of sonny and cher here. I'm
ernie manouse. Remember to tivo if you're not around to watch
it. Good night, everyone.
