We bought amalgamated three farms 3 years ago, and we started thinking about our systems
and how we needed to centralise things, that we needed to bring the whole system together
so we started thinking we might need a new cow shed.
Except that all changed on the 16th June last year when, at 9.30 at night our cow shed burnt
down.
Big ball of flames. Absolutely massive. And the whole cow shed was completely destroyed,
so I got hold of Trevor Barfoote’s contact number.
I called him at 8 o’clock the next morning. An hour and a half later he was at our farm
talking to us, assisting us, talking through different ideas, giving us options, assuring
us that they could help.
The amount of information he was able to give us and give us different ideas, different
concepts and just the assistance at seeing us through such a stressful time was amazing,
let alone the fact that they then went on through the design process, which when it
came down to the actual designing took maybe 2 or 3 weeks.
The information they gave us was just spot on. And then he said, “Look, we can have
this done in 5 to 6 weeks”. And when it came down to it from our first cut of the
pit down to when our cow shed was up and fully functional in regards to the building construction...
5 weeks! Absolutely amazing. When they say they can be there and they say they can do
it... they’ll be there and they’ll do it!
We went and saw one of the other farms and in their cow shed they had a pro-track system.
And we hadn’t actually incorporated that in our design to begin with. And they were
due to pour a section of the concrete in a couple days time and sort of said, “Oh,
we would like a pro-track system incorporated in our shed as well”.
And so they came out the next day and put profiles up and extended the front end of
the cow shed and, yeah, there was no complications or anything.
They’re brilliant. Absolutely brilliant, and so helpful and you can always go back
to them and talk to them again. It’s not just a one off, you can talk to them again
and ask more information and their assistance. It becomes a team, it’s not just: us, our
cow shed, them. It becomes a team.
It’s been brilliant. A brilliant experience. From something negative, something awesome
has happened it’s great.
