Hello!
So being as it's my first Vlog-Style review, I thought I'd run you through some books that
I really enjoyed, but I haven't reviewed for whatever reason.
The first one being
Water for Elephants, which is a book someone recommended to me, and I didn't
really want to read that much because it's not the
kind of thing that I normally go for
but I'm really glad that I did,
because it is definitely a very good book.
It's based on a character called Jacob, who is
going through veterinary school, and he's sitting his last exam
and he gets some bad news relating to his parents,
and he really doesn't know what to do with his life, so he runs away
and
it sounds cliche - he joins the Circus, but
it's not
as a horrible as i've made it sound there
but i think it's
the way that it's written is just very clever because it changes frames, so
you get his opinion
as an older person and his opinion as a younger person, so it's like
as himself as he's older, he's telling
stories about his youth
and I just thought this was a really clever style of writing because it kind of makes you feel
more for the character
so, as though you know him well
you've kind of taken this journey with him throughout his life
and i think that's really important in a book that you kind of feel for the character
because then you're more immersed in the book and it's just generally a better read - I find that
whenever I read something, it tends to be more enjoyable if I can kind of
empathise the characters, and go through what they're going through, as I'm reading.
As I said earlier, the theme is quite stereotypical like;
boy finds out horrible news,
runs off,
falls in love
and so on. I don't want to give too much away
but the way it's written isn't cliche at all,
it's just very cleverly
planned out
and I think I'd give it a four out of five stars. Also the film,
which
again isn't something I'd really normally recommend
but I did really enjoy that too!
I was sort of nervous, almost? About watching it, because
I enjoyed the book so, so much,
and
I was kind of weary about the film because if they had changed a lot of the
plot, that really irritates me personally,
so
it wasn't something I really wanted to watch, but it was defiantly a good film as well.
So I'd recommend the book and the film.
The second book that I'd like to recommend is Still Alice,
which is a book about a woman who has Alzheimer's. She works in a university, and she's very high up in the university
and then she develops early on Alzheimer's and it's basically about
how it progresses
and the problems she faces with having
obviously this horrible horrible disease
and
it was
a really really emotional book, and I don't normally say that because normally,
I like to books, but normally they don't effect me
that emotionally, and I don't know why, it's just something that I don't particularly
find happens happens to me very much, but that defiantly did. It was really
sad in places. At the end, it defiantly gave you something to think about, and
all the way through
there was just little places where it was like;
'Oh my God!'
'You can't do that!'
It was just really good. I think as well, because Lisa Genova has a PhD in the topics she was talking about in the book,
it's really cleverly written. It doesn't feel as though someone has just thought 'Oh! Here's a topic!'
'I'll write about that!'
I think it's really insightful because it's something that a lot of people go through
or, a lot of people have
relatives or friends and family
that have this problem. Erm, I'd probably give this one as well, four out of five stars.
And the last one that I'm going to go through today is the
Southern Vampire Tales. They've been made into a TV series which is True Blood, and
that is again something that one of my friends recommended to me, though
that is more of something that I would normally read, but
I'd say that is defiantly very good as well. I think that there are 13 now?
I've read all of them, but I'd say every single one of them was a really really good read.
I started on the first one which is something that my friend lent to me
and I just had to get the rest of them because they're such good books!
I think the way they are written
is just really good. Like sometimes if you're reading something like that,
it almost feels, towards the end, when you get to the latter books, that
the people are just writing for the sake of writing, but with this series,
the quality of the book stays the same all the way through. So, if you're looking for a series
that goes on for quite a while but is something that events happen,
but is something that is just generally a really really good series,
I'd say defiantly
the Southern Vampire Series is a good one.
If you like this style of video, and would like to see more of this kind of thing where I
talk about books that I enjoyed rather than actually reviewing,
give us a thumbs up so I know that you like it, and I'll try and make some more.
