>> [background music] The BASM program is a bachelor's degree.
It will be an accredited bachelor's degree.
If you were thinking in terms
of the traditional bachelor's degree you see
at four year schools, that you're familiar with,
there are BA's, there are BS's, that has to do with the amount
of liberal art content or the amount of mathematical content.
This degree will sit right in between but it is going
to be a fully accredited bachelor's degree.
It's designed for the person that has got an AA degree
under their belt or equivalent
and has some real world work experience.
Management is at the core of this degree
and you notice it's not business management.
It's management.
And that is why from the advisory committee
to the course content there, you know,
it's about government management.
It's about nonprofit management.
It's about business management.
But management is absolutely at the core and we are going
to have a number of courses that will touch on the world
of entrepreneurial because some people
who are currently working, you know their dream is
to try something on their own.

>> In the real world, people need to know
that you've made a commitment to education
and that you are serious about what you're interested
in so I look at it all as just a circle that completes itself
because it is necessary in our world today.
The opportunities in Lewis County for somebody
with a degree in management are,
there's just countless opportunities
and I think that's the problem.
I think that's what a lot
of people don't understand right now is
that when they are looking at job for maybe a lifetime
in this community they think well what's there, what's open?
And there's some great job opportunities
in management once one is trained
and understands what its community is all about.

>> We have a tuition reimbursement policy
that applies.
Historically we've had a lot of folks that have taken advantage
of that with the two year programs
and even other shorter programs at Centralia College.
That program will be available for this bachelor's program
as well so hopefully we have a number of individuals that work
with us that have been through a two year program
at Centralia College that they see this
and they think it's the right fit for them and they want
to pursue a four year degree, our program will apply to them
and that does provide full tuition reimbursement.
Of course it's based on their performance.
They've got to work hard and perform but if they're willing
to do that, we're willing to step up and help them out.
That's great stuff.
I don't know, I don't see any downsize to this, this is,
just like I said, a great opportunity.

>> It will change the level of thought
about how our communities operate in a real positive way
and it's difficult, the transition that we've been
in in a lot of rural counties, including this one,
where my dad was in logging
and heavy construction when I was a kid.
You could see your way to promotion.
If you were standing at the end of the green chain
and you wanted to be the head sawer,
you could look upstream and see it.
You can't do that any longer.
If you're unskilled and have a lower level of education,
it's tough to see how to be in charge.
Either the machine is running you or you're running it
and if you're running it you're making a lot more money
and have a lot more opportunity to contribute to the community.

>> Midlevel managers who would like to take the next step up,
need that edge, need a little bit of additional education,
would certainly be helped by this.
The business community, this offers us the opportunity
of having good workers who we want to keep, who are valuable
to our company and this allows them to be able
to increase their education and not have to leave the area.
They're allowed, they can do it around their existing job,
they can work it around, what is indelibly an already
business lifestyle.
It's a great place to get inspiration, students are happy.
They are all hanging around.
The campus is gorgeous.
And I can walk from here, make a nice loop and walk back
to my office and feel really inspired.

>> Businesses that are coming in and developing here,
the industrial parks, bigger well established businesses,
could be a very good opportunity.
They're always looking for good people
and if you bring a degree, they get a premium.
You can be an accountant with a business degree
or you can be a marketer with a business degree.
If you're in business management you're going
to be focusing hopefully on accounting and marketing
to some extent but you're going to be looking
at the strategic nature of how a business operates
and decisions they go into, being able to function
into today's environment knowing your competitors
and that's very important.

>> I believe the bachelor's
of today was probably yesterday's associates,
in terms of how many people are looking for you
to have a [inaudible] degree coming into a position.
It's important to have this available in the community
so it can let people that are in current jobs right now that want
to excel, either in their existing company or move
on to other businesses, to be able to get
that education also working
in that flexible program here locally at our college
where they can get that.
We hear constantly from businesses in the area,
you know they're looking for people with that education
and disappointed, when they want to hire local,
that they can't find that you know people base
with the four year degrees, they have to go outside the area
to find an individual.

>> Here's where I think the advantage is of this program.
Number one, the cost, from my understanding it's less
expensive than going to a four year university.
You've got convenience, you know it's close by
and you can do it after work.
It's very flexible in the fact that you can not just,
you can do the work when you have time to do the work
and then there's that last point that I mentioned,
just the tremendous value of going to school
after you've had some real world experiences,
some real life experiences and tying them into textbooks
and also sharing those with other people who are really
under the same circumstances as you
and learning from them as well.

>> The Centralia College is the kind of place that we need
to build, and it's being built, and it's taking our children
and taking the result of great high schools we have
and giving them a chance to go on and now with a new program
of four year college degree, the beginnings
of a whole new opportunity for the community is here
and the support of that opportunity is a wonderful thing
for the community and I think we want to build support
for that among all others in the county.
