This is Ray Nickless the Hydrologist with the National Weather Service in Missoula,
Montana. I will be talking about Water Supply and Flood Potential for the spring and summer
of 2014. Here is an overview of the topics I will be
covering: Snowpack, Water Supply, Flood Potential and Weather Forecasts.
Current snowpack as of February 26th 2014 is average to above average across western Montana and
North Central Idaho. Water Supply Forecasts look good for the summer
of 2014. Streamflow forecasts across the area are average to above average.
Flood potential for the spring of 2014 is greatest in the Bitterroot and Upper Clark Fork
river basins due to above average snowpack, however, spring rains play a big role
in location
and severity of flooding. The March weather outlook calls for Equal
chances of temperatures and equal chances of precipitation. The weather outlook for April, May and June
calls for a chance of slightly warmer temperatures and equal chances of precipitation.
In summary look for abundant water supply for the spring and summer of 2014 with flood potential highest in the Bittterroot
and Clark Fork River basins. Spring rains
could enhance flooding. For more detailed information access the National Weather Service website or give
us a call on the phone.
