Hello guys, and welcome back to the show.
First of all, thank you for your support on the Geek and Sundry competition. Really, it
has meant a lot to me. Not going to the second round, of course, doesn't mean I have to stop!
I really like shows that have a definite end date. Lost, Battlestar Galactica, Breaking
Bad. So, I decided to do the same thing. "Talking Geek TV" (which isn't a very good name, I know,
but I'll stick with it) will run for 10 episodes. It'll be my fun summer project!
But enough of that. Today, I want to talk with you about a great show, Orphan Black.
If you follow any TV related people: critics, showrunners, obsessive fans, you've probably
heard about this BBC America show.
First of all: don't worry about spoilers. You'll get a warning with plenty of time.
Orphan Black stars Tatiana Maslany as Sarah, whose life changes completely after witnessing
the suicide of a woman who looks just like her. Sarah's an orphan and a bit of a drifter
in life. So when this happens, she kind of tries to take advantage of it. She assumes
the woman's identity for a bit, in order to solve her own problems.
Although the show starts with a stolen identity plot, it evolves into something more...science
fiction-y. If you like smart shows, with plenty of twists, and its fair share of comedy and
action, you will like Orphan Black.
Before I enter into the spoiler space, I just want to highlight the great, great work of
Tatiana Maslany, who portrays our protagonist. She's asked to do things no other actress
is doing right now, and probably couldn't do. She's gaining support for an Emmy nomination,
which would be very deserved, but it's realistically unlikely. The Academy of Television Arts and
Sciences often overlooks Sci-Fi...
(JOHN NOBLE SHOULD'VE WON AN EMMY)
...and small cable channels. Also of note is the work of Jordan Gavaris as Felix, Sarah's
foster brother. He's hilarious, and a really essential part of the show.
So, I'm about to talk specifically about some plot points, so if you haven't watched the
show and want to skip the spoilers, click on the button that says so.
Ready? You sure? Okay, well, the big "spoiler" in the early going of the show is that Sarah
is one of many clones. To continue the discussion, I'll leave you with Bob, my clone.
So, yeah. Clones. Each one has a different personality, and it's amazing how Maslany
keeps it all together. The main clones, besides Sarah, are the deceased Beth, Cosima the scientist
and Allison the soccer mom. To add to all that, there's another clone, Helena, hunting
them all down.
It's a very plot heavy show, and it seems like it could go off the rails at any moment.
On lesser hands, it might've happened already. But the great performances, smart writing,
and a real confidence on where the show is going prevent that from happening.
While the ongoing mystery of why the clones where created and by who is always under the
surface, there's always a more pressing issue to solve. Who is monitoring their lives? How
can the clones help each other?
And finally, I can't finish this vlog without mentioning how good Maslany is. Oh, you've done that
already? Well, then, I'll just say that I love what she does with Allison. Her character
arc is probably the most pronounced on the first season, and I can't wait to see where
she goes.
Back to you, Diego.
So yes, Orphan Black. Smart, pulpy show with great performances. On the description there's
a link to a list of options of where to watch it. I encourage you to do that.
