listen. Hello, my name is Quynh Tran. Today I would
like to talk to you about Mr. Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president of the United States.
After watching the movie, Vampire Hunter, I was especially impressed by this president
and motivated to read more books of his biography. I feel that he was the most important and
richest president in American history because of his incredible impact on the nation. His
life is a remarkable story of the rise from humble beginnings to achieve the highest office
in the land. Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809
in a log cabin in Kentucky. He attended school a little because his family was very poor.
He loved to read books and chop wood. He educated himself by borrowing books and studying whenever
he had spare time. He was against slavery all his life. He said that nothing was wrong
if slavery was not wrong. I remember his famous sentence, "As I would not be a slave, so I
would not be a master." On November 6th, 1860, he was elected president
of the United States. In 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation which stated that
all slaves were forever free. This encouraged thousands of people to volunteer
for the Union forces. They served as front line combat troops in every battle of the
war. This led to the victory of the north and the
ending of the Civil War. Unfortunately, he was assassinated and died
on April 15, 1865. Today, we can see him on two denominations
of U.S. currency. You can see the penny and the five dollar bill.
The most famous and most visited memorial is the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
I wish I could go there to visit at least one time in my life.
I feel sad about his death because he died when his country needed him the most to complete
the great task reconstructing the nation. As the president of the United States, he
helped unite the country and free the slaves. I think that he became a great man through
hard work and a strong belief in doing what was right. That's why I chose him for my oral
report. Thank you.
Thank you very much for your report.
