Hi, this is Jon on behalf of Expert Village. In this video clip I'll be showing you how
to plan the design for our computer desk hutch. The first thing I always do when designing
a piece of furniture, is go online and take a look at some of the furniture that other
people have designed and use some of those ideas into my furniture. Now the thing that
I like about his design is that it's pretty simple. There's two sides, there's a couple
of shelves and then there's some storage in the center. Now, I don't really like that
storage in the center, so I'm not going to include that and all this center portion is
just going to be open. This is what the top of my desk looks like right now. Now, I'm
going off of the design from the one that I got off the internet. My hutch is going
to go about like this from both sides, then it's going to be angled in the center there.
Since my two main components that will be on my hutch are going to be a printer and
a scanner. I'm going to go ahead and measure those to make sure that they're going to fit
on my hutch top. This printer measures about 11 inches, so I know that my hutch depth has
to be a minimum of 11 inches. The scanner measures about 11 1/2 inches across, so now
that I now the dimensions, I know what I can have the depth of my hutch be. Since my equipment
measured 11 and 11 1/2 inches, I'm going to set the depth of my hutch to 12 inches, which
should provide me enough room for the cables sticking out of the back. Now on my desk I
have a 1 inch over hang on the sides in the front. I'm going to model this when I make
the hutch. I'm going to have my side supports 1 inch in, I'm going to have a back support
here and then what I'm going to do is I'm going to put skirt boards all the way across
to help with the stability of my hutch. Now for the top of my hutch I want it to extend
to the edges of my desk and I want it to over hang the side boards by an inch. So that'll
go here and then I'm actually going to have it extend an inch in the front as well.
