July 26th
each year always reminds us of the Americans with Disabilities Act signing
in 1990 and it's a great touchstone for any of us in the
disability movement to think about the
grand success that that represents in terms of moving toward equitable access
in American society for people with disabilities. The ADA has had a
significant impact. It's been 23 years and I think we've figured
out lots of things under the protections it affords.
We see ramps in many more public places,
we see brail on elevators and also in public places
and we see employers beginning to respond to their recognition that
inclusion of people with disabilities in their recruitment strategies and the
retention strategies is an important part of doing good business.
We think these are significant changes while recognizing we have lots more to
do, so here at the ILR School we continue to look for new ways to
contribute to improving employment outcomes for people with disabilities.
Being a college for the workplace, the ILR School is perfectly positioned
to help us address
employment issues for people with disabilities and it has a long-standing
history in doing so - it's been working on these issues since the
late 1960's
The Employment Disability Institute, which sits here in the ILR School, is
well-resourced to provide employers with information about recruitment,
retention, career advancement,
and inclusion issues for people with disabilities. We have many online tools
and many technical assistance specialists ready and waiting to answer questions
that come our way on this very important issue.
I think as we look at the accomplishments of the Americans with
Disabilities Act today,
one of the most compelling agendas that we are beginning to focus on here in the
ILR School
is how to take what we've learned in these 23 years globally.
Multinationals are requiring us to try to respond to
their interest in doing the kinds of recruitment and retention
and employment non-discrimination that they've learned over these two decades
to other places in the world and we're ready and eager to respond to that
requirement .
