New studies come out all the time trumpeting the healthy effects of drinking, and some
people use these as an excuse to indulge. So what’s the bottom line?
Drinking in moderation does seem to have some health benefits, such as lowering the risk
of heart disease. “Moderation” means up to 2 drinks a day for men, and up to 1 a day
for women.
What counts as a drink? Approximately 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of
hard liquor.
Consume any more than this and you start to increase your risk of a number of serious
health problems, including breast cancer for women. Binge drinking also increases health
risks, so downing your weekly quota in one night is not smart.
