On the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster,
the UN is honouring its victims
and stressing the need to help the region.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
rang the ceremonial peace bell at UN headquarters
in New York Tuesday,
before addressing the General Assembly
on his recent visit to the site
of the former nuclear power plant.
He emphasized the need for the international community
to learn from Chernobyl.
"Last week countries pledged 550 million euros
to continue work on a new shelter for the damaged reactor.
That shield is expected to last another hundred years.
What we now need is a shield to protect our wider world"
"25 years ago, people chanted,
"No more Chernobyl,"
together, let us say that again today, and act"
