What is the veil?
If you listen to the people
you are not accountable to them.
You have to listen to Allah
that youíre accountable the day of judgment
so you must have an hijab from the people.-
for Allah. If you will not do so,
the ayah say We put a covering on their hearts
they should understand it.
They will not understand the essence -
because you cannot, you see
you cannot have two things in your minds.
Either you listen to Allah or you listen to mankind.
This is theÖthis is the problem.
So I have read these ayahs to explain to you
that there is not a single verse in the whole
Quraían the word hijab has
referred as any sort of gear,
a clothing or a gear, the clothes
or a wearing of a gear.
It is always a psychological barrier .
in relation to belief.
And Allah is expecting mankind to have a hijab.
Now I will go into detail. I am not denying,
they must have a hijba, the veil,
a psychological and physical - in order,
purpose you must understand,
for in order that Allah should speak to us,
so that Allah communicate to us -
behind a veil
(Arabic)
Hazrat Maryam established that hijba
so Allah communicated to her.
So we, Mulsims, should have a hijab/veil,
men and women both so that
Allah should communicate to us.
Meaning we should,
we can understand the ayahs or the essence
or the message of Allahís ayahs.
That is the purpose. So now we will note,
now I will Öthis was the word hijab
where the Quraíanic ayah contains the word hijabÖ
Now I will discuss those ayahs referring to women -
referring to women first because in
the Quraían also Hazrat Maryam is also mentioned
in relation to hijab. That is why
I am going to speak first about the women.
We have to understand first
what the Quraían says about the womenís personality -
why the hijab or Hazrat Maryam took a hijab
that Allah speaks to her behind that veil,
the hijab/the veil. But at the same time,
what is the, why woman related to hijab mostly
and in the Quraían also.So you have to understand
what is the personality of women as mentioned
in the Quraíanic ayahs.
One ayat I will refer to
and then you followÖcarry on.
Surah 3: 14
(Arabic)
Adornment for people is the love of desires
from women and sons and heaped up heaps of gold
and silver and cattle and cultivated land.
That is the enjoyment of worldly life
and the beautiful resort is near Allah. .
The first word of this ayah is zuyenna.
The word zuyenna means zeeant. In English,
in English means adornment.
Adornment - women are adornment.
And the ayah says folinnas.
Folinnas mean mankind
(Arabic)
For mankind adornment are the love of the desires
(Arabic)
from women , number 1.
(Arabic)
From the sons
(Arabic)
means gold, heaps of gold and silver.
(Arabic)
marked horses and the cultivated land.
Thes five aspects are the adornment,
the love and the desire and the
adornment for men and women both.
All men and all women would like to have
heaps of gold. Donít you?
All men and women would like to have sons
in comparison to daughters.
All men and women would like to have marked horses
as the ownership.
Or cultivated land in their possession.
Who will not like to have?
Everybody.
(Arabic)
This is the mata or the enjoyment of this worldly life
that Allah has made men and women both in a manner
that these five aspects, every men and woman,
every man and woman would like to posses,
they have the desire,
love and desire for these things.
In that, women is an adornment -
for both men and women.
For men and women both.
All these things Iíve explained to you but our
topic is the women so we come to know from this ayah
that the personality of woman is that they are adornment.
For not only men, for women also. You are nothing but kole.
You know, men, you understand what kole is?
From now onwards you must know
that for men and women both,
women are adornment.
They look at each other, they adorn,
for not you, for women. Because women are adornment
and men are also like them, women also.
Like their beauty and adornment.
You must know the personality
that Allah has made for women.
The personality of the women is adornment.
Now discussing, we have to understand
from my head to my foot,
physically and psychologically,
in both aspects women are adornment.
So now this we are adornment physically
you must understand also from head to toe completely.
Physically and psychologically they are adornment
for both sexes, men and women both. So what,
why Allah says in the ayahs about they are adornment
so they have to, what they have to expose
and what they have to hide.
Because they are adornment for both sexes.
So this is how the lecture will go on.
Now we are discussing the hijab
specifically relating to women.
We will not see the word hijab,
from now onwards you will not see any word,
what hijab in the ayah. But we will know,
we know the hijab meaning, the barrier.
Now what is the barrier/hijab for women?
Surah Noor 24: 31 What Allah says
(Arabic)
This is not a complete verse.
I am just reading a portion of the verse
and then I will read further the whole verse.
And say to the believing
women to lower themselves
from their insights and
preserve their gaps/private parts
and do not show their adornment except
what is obvious from it and they should strike over
juyubhienna/their pockets with their coverings.
It is in continuation
(Arabic)
And that they should show their zeenat/adornment
except for their husbands or their fathers
or their husbandsí fathers or their sonís
or their husbandsí sons or their brothers
or their brothersí sons., of their sistersí sons
or their women or what their right hand,
or their right possesses
or their subordinates/followers,
other than from men who are skilful/professional
or except those children on whom women,
womenís pudendum/genitals are not obvious
and they should not strike with their feet
so what is hidden from their zeenat/adornment
is known and turn to Allah altogether,
O believers that you will prosper.
Now I willÖI have just read
the Arabic text and English translation.
To understand easily, I will read this whole ayat
in 3 different portions - one little by little.
First of all we will discuss,
come to again pages 5 and 6
(Arabic)
and say for the believing women to lower themselves
from their insights
(Arabic)
I pause here, one portion of that complete ayah.
Allah is telling to the believing women.
Allah is not speaking to women.
Heís not talking to women. Believing women.
And believing women means who believe.
Not by the lip service
(Arabic)
Sorry.
(Arabic)
Say to the believing women
(Arabic)
that they should lower themselves
from their insights.
(Arabic)
Aim means eyes. Ainun ain. Ainein - two eyes.
In this ayah, thereís no eyes,
you note very carefully.
It is Basarat and Basarat means insight.
It is the insight. It is a sight but insight.
So Allah is telling women,
believing women to lower themselves
from their insights,
the insights that have already
been given to you by Allah,
and most of the ayahs gives you insight -.
When we ponder on the ayahs,
the Allah gives us the insight.
So Allah is telling these ayahs thaa the women,
believing women should lower themselves
from their insights, that is the first hijab
or the barrier they have to create.
They have to follow this barrier.
Itís not mentioned here but we have to understand.
The women should not look downwards all the time,
they should look into face to man
by from the inside they should lower their emotions
or feelings or shaitanic spurs.
They have to lower themselves.
The first. The second is
(Arabic)
And they should preserve their gaps or private parts
We all know the womenís private parts.
The word Arabic is
(Arabic)
It doesnít say cover your private part.
We donít have to say, cover your private parts
so you people are covered. You have to preserve,
preserve your private part.
Cover is understood but you can cover yourself
by clothes but your may not preserve your private parts.
So specifical Allah says
(Arabic)
You have to preserve your piivate parts.
You donít want, youíd like
to have clarification for that,
you understand Preserving the private parts
and covering the private
parts are two different things.
Men and women can cover themselves by clothes.
But they may not preserve their private pats.
They can first do some adultery or fornication.
The ayat say you must preserve your private parts.
2. Hijab, the second hijab for the believing women.
Now this third phrase
(Arabic)
means that they should not show their adornment
except what is obvious from it. One thing
(Arabic)
They should not show their adornment except
(Arabic)
illa) except what is obvious from it.
So that means, I told you before,
we haveÖdonít forget the previous ayahsÖ
I will read this verse and then
I will explain to you that what are the obvious
parts of the woman.
Because Allah says that the woman should not show
the zeenat or the adornment
(Arabic)
They should not show the zeenat or the adornment,
their adornment except
(Arabic)
what is obvious from it.
This is the main issue of the ayah -
main issue that you have to understand today.
We have already said from head to toe Physically
and psychologically women are the adornment.
We have already, have read before.
So from head to toe women are adornment And in that,
Allah is telling, they can show the adornment,
that is they can show something.
They cannot show anything except
what is obvious from it.
So physically and psychologically
both we have to discuss.
What physical parts they can expose
What is the psychological aspects they can expose?
So to understand this ayah Iíll go to the next page
and then weíll come back again.
Surah Maida 5: 6
(Arabic)
O you who believe,
when you stand for salah/ prayer ,
wash your faces and hands to the elbows;
and rub your heads and wash your feet to the ankles.
This ayah is not complete.
But I am referring just one aspect
of this ayah in relation,
how it will be related to our topic.
The hijab of women and men both.
We are discussing women first.
So Allah when addresses to
(Arabic)
It addresses to both,
men and women both. Men and women both.
O you who believe, men and women,
when you stand for prayer,
when you stand for stand for salah/the prayer
(Arabic)
wash your faces, wash your faces.
(Arabic)
And wash your hands to the elbow.
Wash your hands to the elbow, specific portions,,
hands to the elbow.
(Arabic)
And rub your hands on your head.
(Arabic)
And wash your feet to the ankles.
These are the parts that
Allah is asking to wash and rub.
The head has to be rubbed.
And the other, the face has to be washed
the hands to the elbows to be washed.
And the feet to he ankles to be washed.
And massage, to tub the head
before you come to salah/the prayer.
Can anyone tell in the audience.
You a re coming for the first time.
Why is Allah is asking to wash these parts.
Why not the other parts?
Anyone in the audience
who has come for the first time - any ladies,
I am asking you a question.
Yes? Anyone from the audience?
Why these, why these parts?
Why not the shoulders, why not the thaighs
why not the chest and other parts?
Sorry? Very good. What?
They are the exposed parts.
They are the exposed parts in the whole world.
The face is exposed, the head is exposed,
the ankles are exposedÖbut these are
the generally exposed parts in the whole world,
men and women both.
But because of the culture in
the summer climatic conditions or the winter
conditions they may be covered of
they may be exposed further.
But the ayah that is referring to is the portions
that are exposed parts of men and both.
So because in this ayah we have to come to know
men and women both physical exposed parts are mention
in the Quraíanic ayahs in relation
to the saslah/the prayer.
That is not, we understand by this ayah.
The ayahs that I am reading,
the word hijab is not mentioned in any part,
any ayat, now in the further Iíve read.
But we are understanding from those ayaat
what is the hijab or the barrier,
what are the exposed parts and
what are the hidden parts.
From theses ayah. So in this ayat also
it is not referring directly to the hijab.
These are the exposed parts of men and women both.
All exposed, the head is to be exposed,
the hands to the elbows are to be exposed
and feet to the ankles to be exposed.
Again I go to, let so go to and I read,
when I look downwards, almost in the end of the ayah,
page no. 2 no 34
(Arabic)
Ands they should not strike with their feet
so what is hidden from their zeenat/adornment is known.
Now I will read the whole ayat again
but I just want to make a point you must understand,
listen to me very carefully.
The first portion that I read I read again
(Arabic)
Do not, the women should not expose their adornment
except what is obvious.
We have come to know the parts what are obvious.
Now this ayat says, the portion of the ayat says,
And they should not strike their feet
so that what is hidden from the zeeant is known.
So in this ayat we come to know the hidden zeeant,
the hidden adornment.
I am reading the end very carefully
And they should not strike with their feet
so what is hidden from their zeeant/adornment is known.
So my question to you is, the rest part,
we know the exposed part.
We know the exposed part, obvious part.
We know the obvious parts. - the head,
the face and the hands to the elbows and the feet.
Now Allah says the women should not strike their feet
so hard that the hidden part is be known.
So you know what are the other parts.
You know, all of you,
hat are the other hidden zeenat of a woman.
The exposed zeenat of a woman
and the hidden zeenat of a woman.
Adornment total adornment, I am not Ö
we agreed to that from head to toe women are adornment.
But the exposed adornment or the exposed part
of the body and the hidden part of
the body Allah Himself says
that they should not strike their feet
The exposed parts are the wudhu parts
which you do wudhu. The other is the hidden part.
And that is also mentioned in the ayah
that you should, they should not strike their feet,
women, so that hidden parts will be known.
Other than that, like for example somebody said
hat the hair is the hidden part.
So if their strike their feet,
would you know their heads? Back of head they have,
they strike their feet what you will come to know?
That is the hidden aspect of women.
Before I discuss I would like to discuss this also.
What is a haea? You know, actually in language,
if you look, we always use this word.
Where the emotions and feelings are stirred up,
what part of a, what physical part of a human man?
From where the emotions are felt
or you know .heart. And intelligent head.
So Allah says , wash your head . Head is the,
physical is head is the psychologically
would be intelligence. Head.
Face isÖwhat is the face? Face,
one is the physical face you to see
and then isÖin psyche we get,
can identify a woman of a man by face.
And hands to the elbow is, you work.
What is yourÖyou hands are proposing what you workÖ
what is your work, what is yourÖ
where are you going and what is your hands,
what do you hands do, and you feet is referring toÖ
to feet to the ankles is where your whereabouts,
where you go. Where you move about,
where you go, where your legs take you.
In physically, what are the exposed parts,
I will just say, that least they can show their face.
Head they can talk, they can intelligently,
any men, intelligently, can show their feelings,
emotions. Because that comes from heart.
And hands too when they are working somewhere,
they can identify, we are working so and so.
What are their movements, where they move about ,
they can identify. This is my movement,
movementÖAnd move about.
So psychologically and physically
these are the exposed aspects of women.
They can expose themselves toÖphysically
they can expose is a face that references,
the personality, identification
and their women identification in the world,
in the Quraían is that Hazxart Maryam (pbuh)
was identified in the Quraían -
as Imranís daughter and as Harounís sister..
Because she was not married,
that means she was referred to Haroun as
the sister of Haroun and as the daughter of Imran.
And Nooh (pbuh) and Luth (pbuh)
and Ibraheem (pbuh) and other prophetsí
wives are referred as Ibraheemís wife,
noohís wife and Luthís wife No wife name is mention
in the Quraían. No prophetís or
no womanís name is mentioned in the Quraían.
They are referred as Noohís wife, Luth (pbunís)
Luth (pbuhís) wife or Moosa (pbuhís)
wife or Firaonís wife.
you understand what I am saying?
So women are identified by men.
from their daughters or from their fathers
or from their sons or from their brothers
or from their husbands.
So that is why God has represented,
showed their face can also identify
that who are they.,
meaning they are the daughters of so and so,
they are wife of so and so,
they are the mother of so and so,.
The Essa (pbuh), that Maryam was
the mother of Jesus (pbuh).
So their face identification should be known.
The face is an identification.
So we were reading this
(Arabic)
We have understood this ayat,
now further portionís
(Arabic)
And they should strike over you
(Arabic)
Their pockets with their coverings.
Now what is joyoob. Joyoob is the plural of jaib.
And what is jaib? A pocket. A pocket.
You understand jaib in Urdu?
And plural of jaib is juyoob.
So Allah says
(Arabic)
that they may strike with their
coverings over the pockets.
So we have to understand what are the pockets,
physical pocketsÖI think you all,
all of you understand the physical pocket of a woman.
They are carrying something, the breast,
the chest, you understand. Theyíre carrying some,
the breast or the chest.
Psychology is because the heart is here
and also near so Allah says that
they should strike over the juyoob in the pockets.
With their coverings.
Meaning that every woman in the world contains
the feelings and emotions.
The fathers contains the feelings
and emotions of their brothers -
contains the feelings and emotions of the sons.
Every man is telling something to the women.
And women are having these information from all people,
from the sons they are having the feelings
or informationÖSo if they start talking from here
and there it will be confusion.
So what Öbecause Allah has referred
woman as Malika Saba,
the queen, sheís the best of the politicians.
So why Allah has said in the whole Quraían,
Suleiman (pbuh) is the king,
is kingÖnoÖMalikÖMalikÖand the Malika is woman,
Malika Saba. And her throne is referred
as a_ azeem throne.
So women are the beautiful queens.
Because they know how,
they are good maneuvrers,
they have to maneuver the husband,
they have to maneuver the sons,
they have to maneuver the brother,
they have to maneuver the whole family as such.
If they start talking behind their backs to everyone,
thereíll be fighting and war. So that is,
Allah says, they should strike over
their pockets with their coverings.
So that they should not discuss
so many aspects of life with other people
who they are carrying the secrets
of others and their own.
That is they say that women talk behind backs,
men also do so, but mostly it is famous for women.
So this is the hijab or the veil
that they should strike over their pockets.
They should not discuss the secrets of their husbands
or family talks or personal talks, with people.
They should not have kind of friends,
male or female, they should speak to
their family talks not to other people,
this is the hijab of the veil of a woman,
that is that they should strike over their pockets,
over the pockets I am telling you are physical,
Iíve told you what is the physical pocket,
you all of you know. But at the same time
the psychological aspect. of this ayah is
that they should hold secrets of other peoples
or information that they are carrying.
And you will note that the information
that are leaked by men is through women.
They hire a woman to find out, to g to, talk to,
have a friendship with this man and find out
what kind of a man he is
and dig out the information.
So men mostly they talk and women sit
and listen and smile and show this adornment
and they get the secrets out.
So Allah is telling this woman to strike it.
This is the hijab of the woman we are discussing.
Now, if you note, till now we have discussed Ö
I am discussing physical hijab continuously
and psychological continuously both.
Now in this aspect Allah says if you look
(Arabic)
They should not, they should not show their
I am not reading the brackets. 0:30:28.898,1193:02:47.295 zeenat/adornment except for their husbands.
Iím asking you what is the adornment
they can show to their husbands
as well as to their fathers?
Is it physicalÖof courseÖ
you can say but this one thing continuity
with everybody. You must understand
what is the adornment that can be shown
to the husbands,
at the same time they can show to the fathers
or the husbands fathers or the son or husbands,
you must understand. So thisÖ
what is the adornment,
is it a physical adornment
or psychological adornment
they have to show to their fathers?
Psychological adornment. Right -
they canít show it to their sonsÖ
Iíll read it Ölook at the relation
youíll come to know.
Look if you say husbandsÖyou just read -
except for their husbands
or their fathers or their husbandsí
fathers. You canít show the physical adornment
to husbandsí fathers or their sons
or their husbandsí son or their brothers
or their brothersí sons or their sistersí sons
or their women or what their right possesses
or their subordinate followers other
than men who are skilful. Acha,
now I will discuss if you note the word or
or is very important here.
