I'm Tom Larson and I teach digital audio recording at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Before I began teaching at UNL,
I owned a recording studio for 15 years.
So I've got some good experience behind this.
MUSIC
This class is taught over two semesters.
In the first semester, students learn about the
principles of sound and the basics of the equipment
that is used to record it.
MUSIC
They also learn how to set up and work with
microphones, mixing consoles and digital recording
devices such as laptop computers.
MUSIC
Students also learn how to use recording software
known as digital audio workstations or DAWs.
The second semester of the class is focused on the
basics of mixing.
This encompasses how to make your recordings sound
as good as they possibly can,
as well as the various ways to manipulate recorded
sounds to create interesting effects.
MUSIC
In each semester, students will have opportunities to
record UNL student ensembles, collaborate with other
digital arts classes, and record their own projects.
